Greater Manchester is setting out spending plans of £3 billion as the city-region takes over further control of its budget under new devolution arrangements.
The total budget includes £482 million to deliver the integrated public transport system, the Bee Network, over £900 million towards policing and keeping communities safe, £313 million to support the Fire and Rescue service and deliver the Mayor’s priorities, £187 million for waste and recycling services, and more than £1.1 billion of capital funding to drive growth across the city region. A £360 million package of measures for the next year will see Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) invest to protect renters, support businesses, help young people, and boost skills and training.
A £79 million investment will also go to supporting business in the city-region. For example, a new flagship £10 million GM Production Fund will build on our creative sector strengths by making Greater Manchester the most attractive place in the UK for film and TV productions. Funding will also support the continued delivery of the grassroots Build A Business support delivered through libraries throughout Greater Manchester.
Last year, Greater Manchester agreed a trailblazing new Integrated Settlement with the Government, replacing a system of separate funding pots; policing, fire and rescue and some other services will also be funded through Council Tax precepts in addition to this settlement. This new funding structure will to support November’s launch of the Greater Manchester Strategy, which set out the city-region’s mission for future growth, and builds on the 3.1% annual growth Greater Manchester has seen since 2015.
