Major Metrolink closures planned for Autumn

Following a major track replacement programme by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) during summer 2026, a second phase of works will see further temporary closures on the Metrolink network.

In July, TfGM completed 1.6 km of track replacement between Trafford Bar and Deansgate-Castlefield, one of the busiest and most complex parts of the network.

Phase 2 of work will again see a number of Metrolink lines affected, with closures or limited services on select dates during September and October as follow-up work after the summer’s track replacement programme compltes.

Follow-up work is planned between Deansgate-Castlefield and Trafford Bar for one day on Sunday 6 September. Work begins from start of service and continues into the afternoon.

A second phase of track replacement work will take place between Monday 19 October and Sunday 1 November, with normal services due to resume from Monday 2 November.

While these works are carried out:

• No trams will operate on the Eccles, Trafford Centre and Altrincham lines
• Services operating on the East Didsbury/Manchester Airport lines will terminate at Firswood.
• Services operating on the Rochdale line will terminate at Exchange Square.

Replacement buses will operate between the affected stops for those who have bought a Metrolink ticket, or customers may choose to travel via other Bee Network bus services.
