SEVERAL Stockport College Construction students have been snapped up to complete work placements thanks to the dedicated support of Pochin Construction Ltd, M+W UK and Construction Youth Trust.
Through Construction Youth Trust’s ‘Budding Brunels’ programme, Pochin Construction and M+W UK offered students the opportunity to gain insight into the construction profession through presentations from the industry professionals, as well as being able to visit the live site of what will soon be part of Europe’s largest cancer treatment centre, the new Manchester Cancer Research Centre (MCRC) building.
During the site visit to the MCRC building, the students took part in various activities whilst shadowing the industry experts and learning about the vast array of professional roles on offer within the industry, from Site Engineering and Project Management to Corporate Social Responsibility.
Stockport College FE Construction Lecturer in Michael Lavelle said:
“Our students are able to forge an understanding of the varied roles available within construction and gain invaluable employability skills, so they can make informed decisions on their career paths.
“This continued support from employer partners has been instrumental for Construction learners entering professional employment.
“Placement plays an important part in the student’s teaching and learning experience – it confirms the importance of industrial engagement in the built environment academy and helps students think about their future career ambitions.”
George Newman, a student from the College who took part in the three-day Budding Brunels programme, has since been offered a work placement with Pochin Construction:
“I’m really looking forward to being able to put into practice the skills I’ve learned on my course in a specialist industry whilst building contacts and knowledge as I go.
“It is always beneficial to have relevant work experience to complement your studies and I believe that because of the opportunities the work placement scheme will provide it will help me to not only further my skills and knowledge but hopefully secure a job within the industry once I have completed the course.”
The students will have the opportunity to work in roles across the businesses; including property development, commercial estates management, and construction and lettings. These placements will offer the students the chance to gain new skills, on-site knowledge and provide fantastic networking opportunities.
