Demolition works have begun on a former Wythenshawe Peacocks store as Manchester City Council and placemaker, Muse, kick off £32 million works.
The project is funded by £20 million from the UK Government and a further £11.9 million from Manchester City Council and paves the way for new community and outdoor spaces. A brand new Culture Hub, food hall, workspace and improvements to outdoor public areas will be included in the works. These exciting new spaces will bring fresh opportunities to the town and make Civic a greener and more welcoming and accessible place for locals and visitors to enjoy and spend time in.
Joel Chandler, Senior Development Manager at Muse, which is also a development partner on major regeneration schemes in Stockport town centre, including Stockport 8 and Stockport Exchange, said:
“We have been consulting with people about what they want to see in Wythenshawe for some time now, so beginning the demolition of the former Peacocks unit is a huge milestone for everyone. Works at Civic will continue at pace from this point as we deliver the project we have promised over the next couple of years.
“All of the shops and services at Civic will remain open throughout the works, and we’re encouraging local people to stay involved in shaping the wider plans as they progress.”
Cllr Bev Craig, Leader of Manchester City Council, said:
“This is a real mile marker moment for Wythenshawe Civic. After some months of setting a vision, taking time to have a proper conversation with local people, and planning we can celebrate the first tangible signs of construction – the first in a long-term plan that will transform the town centre.”
Demolition of Peacocks will complete early next year, with construction of the Culture Hub, food hall, workspaces and new public square also starting in early 2026. All new spaces are expected to open in 2027.
