Foodie destinations in Stockport have been namechecked by Condé Nast Traveller in recommending Manchester as one of the UK’s top destinations for a weekend away.
Manchester ranked sixth in the travel magazine’s run-down of city break destinations, out of 13 cities in the UK, and was the top destination in the North of England, ahead of Newcastle (seventh) and Liverpool (tenth), the only other cities in the region to make the list. Beating Manchester to the top 5 were Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, Bristol and Cambridge. While the city had slipped a place since last year’s ranking, Condé Nast Traveller praised Manchester’s burgeoning food and drink scene.
While eateries in the city centre and Northern Quarter were unsurprising mentions, a number of Stockport’s hospitality highlights were also included as examples of how the wider city-region was contributing the city’s foodie credentials.
Both the Produce Hall (pictured) in Stockport’s Victorian Market Place and highly acclaimed fine-dining spot, Where The Light Gets In, were both recommended by the publication. Plant-based eatery, The Allotment, originally established in Stockport and now in Manchester city centre, also secured a mention.
The recognition of Stockport’s growing food scene from a major travel publication will be welcome news to the town’s hospitality sector which, much like in other towns and cities nationwide, has been severely impacted by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.
Since publishing its top city break ranking, Condé Nast Traveller has since also further recommended Stockport for tourism, with writer Anya Meyerowitz declaring the town “merits a visit separate from its much-raved-about Northern sister.” Her article highlights more of the town’s great food and drink spots, but also praises its cultural and historical sites.
