Stockport’s state-of-the-art transport interchange has been shortlisted by Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce for its Building of the Year Award.
The aim of the Building of the Year Award is to recognise a building’s contribution to Greater Manchester in terms of construction and development. This could include the building’s significance to the City Region, its impact on the local economy, its effect on the local community, its importance in terms of urban regeneration and environmental enhancement, its design excellence, or its contribution to urban design and townscape.
Stockport Interchange opened in 2024 and was delivered by a joint venture between Stockport Council, Transport for Greater Manchester and the Greater Manchester Combined Authority, in conjunction with development partner, CityRise Interchange Homes Limited (a joint venture partnership between developer Cityheart and operator Rise Homes); the contractor was Willmott Dixon Construction. As well as a bus terminus with capacity for 164 services per hour, the development also includes a new walking and cycling route connecting with the train station, a rooftop town centre park, and nearly 200 build-to-rent apartments, and sits at the centre of Stockport’s £1 billion town centre regeneration ambitions.
Since completing, the scheme has already picked up a number of awards, including at the International Partnership Awards, ‘Community Impact of the year’ at Cowgills North West Homebuilders Awards, and Design, Engineering and Construction Project of the Year category at the National Transport Awards, as well as two prizes at the Royal Town Planning Institute Awards.
Stockport Interchange is one of six buildings across the city-region to have been named as finalists for this year’s award:
- Rochdale Town Hall
- CO-OP Live Arena
- Eden
- Stockport Interchange
- North View, North Manchester General Hospital
- Viadux Phase 1
Diane Elebert-Morgan, Property & Construction Group Manager at Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce, said:
“We have a great selection of shortlisted buildings from across Greater Manchester. Ranging from the restoration of historic gem Rochdale Town Hall to the world-class venue CO-OP Live Arena, the list shows how Greater Manchester is blazing a trail in architecture. We can all be proud that our area is home to such fantastic buildings, and I look forward to seeing the winner crowned in March.”
The winner of the Building of the Year Award 2024 will be announced at the Property & Construction Annual Dinner, which is being held 6th March at Imperial War Museum North.
