Stockport County has brought one of the rarest and most fascinating artefacts in the club’s history back to life, unveiling a reimagined version of the iconic Romania shirt as the latest release in the County Classics range.
Officially launched in October, County Classics celebrates standout kits and memorable moments from the club’s past. The revival of the Romania-inspired line reconnects fans with an unforgettable chapter from the Hatters’ famous 1996-97 League Cup run, all while championing the creativity and independent spirit of modern Stockport.
To mark the relaunch, Stockport County collaborated with two influential local independents, SK1 Records and The Spinn Off, to host an exclusive event for season ticket holders in the heart of the Underbanks.
The event showcased the spirit of the modern town centre: creative, community-led and proudly Stopfordian. Illustrator Emily Flanagan (Flazzle) brought this to life, transforming The Spinn Off’s and SK1 Records shopfront with bespoke artwork and creating live portrait illustrations for attendees throughout the day. Together, these collaborations reinforced County’s commitment to celebrating Stockport’s independent culture as part of the club’s own identity.

The original Romania County shirt remains one of the most distinctive kits ever worn by the club. Produced at short notice ahead of a League Cup clash with Blackburn Rovers in October 1996, the shirt was sourced and adapted by County’s kit supplier – who also provided kits for the Romania national team – after both our home and away kits clashed with Rovers’ blue-and-white halves.
Worn only once by Dave Jones’ promotion-chasing side, the shirt witnessed a famous 1-0 victory at Ewood Park – a defining moment that helped shape one of the greatest cup runs in club history. The kit was never made available for retail, leaving just a handful of player-worn originals in existence and cementing its status as a true cult classic.
Nearly three decades later, the shirt returns as a centrepiece of the County Classics
range. The revived collection blends football heritage with contemporary streetwear
influences and is available at the County Store and online.
