Stockport Council is asking residents to get in contact if they have acquired an extra black bin for non-recyclable waste.
It costs four times as much to dispose of waste in black bins than it does to recycle waste.
Using an extra black bin when it’s not needed causes costly delays to refuse collections and costs more to dispose of, plus it has a negative impact on the environment.
Councillor Kevin Hogg, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Public Realm, said: “There could be many reasons why residents have acquired an extra bin. Some people take their bins with them when they move house, others take an empty bin back in thinking it’s theirs and then keep it.
“But, from the end of February, action will be taken to remove any additional black bins which haven’t been applied for through the Council. So let us know in advance and we will remove the bin free of charge or help guide you through making an application for the use of an additional black bin.”
For most residents a 140ltr black bin is enough when used alongside the recycling bins. However, in some cases, for large families for example, a second bin may be needed. An application form can be found on the Council website at: www.stockport.gov.uk/rightthingrightbin.
Households who have previously been issued with an additional bin do not need to contact the Council.
Residents that have an additional black bin that needs collecting can contact the Council by emailing stockportdirect@stockport.gov.uk or phone 0161 217 6111.
