An historic building situated in Great Underbank that has laid dormant for more than 10 years is set to be transformed thanks to a forward-thinking private and public sector collaboration.
Spearheaded by Kelsall Architects, a Stockport-based architectural practice, the project will redevelop a former unused space situated within a conservation area.
With six-figure support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (via Stockport Council’s Rediscovering the Underbanks Townscape Heritage Initiative) and specialist property lender, VM Finance, the rejuvenation project is underway following appointment of the main contractor, Restoration Projects, which recently started on site.
The project, targeted for completion in Summer 2026, includes extensive refurbishment of the existing building, installation of new glazing and a new frontage. Heritage features will be retained and restored, where possible.
Kelsall is known and respected for its transformational credentials and has been recognised by RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) for its Mustard Cowork scheme at 13 Little Underbank.
Paul Kelsall, director at Kelsall Architects, said:
“Repurposing historic buildings is very complex. It’s great that we’re finally underway with delivering our vision to transform a beautiful and under-utilised asset on our doorstep.
“As everyone knows, viability is an issue across the built environment, so we’re grateful to be able to access investment through multiple channels in order to bring the scheme forward.”
Andrew Evans, CEO at VM Finance Ltd, added:
“Paul and his team demonstrated a strong track record and direct experience. When combined with his team’s enthusiasm, it made it a sound investment prospect.
“This project is the latest in a long line of schemes we’ve supported in Greater Manchester, and it’s set to be a leading, high-quality development.”
VM Finance works with clients across the UK to provide development financing, property investment financing, bridging financing and mortgage brokering.
