A long-standing charity supporting unpaid carers is marking its 40th anniversary with the announcement of a change of name from Signpost Stockport for Carers to Signpost for Carers
The change in name reflects how caring roles and support needs have evolved over time. Increasingly, Signpost is supporting carers who may not live in Stockport but care for someone who does, or those who live locally but care for someone outside the borough. The new name better reflects this reality, ensuring the organisation remains accessible and relevant to those it supports.
Founded in 1986, Signpost has supported thousands of unpaid carers, people who provide vital care to family members, friends, or neighbours. Over four decades, the organisation has grown and adapted to meet changing needs, while maintaining its strong local roots.
Bethan Kelly, Chief Executive Officer, said:
“As we enter our 40th year, this is an important moment to reflect on how caring has changed and how we respond to that. While Stockport remains at the heart of what we do, we are increasingly supporting carers whose situations don’t fit neatly within geographic boundaries. This change ensures we remain inclusive, accessible, and responsive to the people who need us.”
The charity will continue to operate from The Heatons Centre in Stockport, maintaining its strong local presence and trusted relationships within the community.
Paul Connellan, Chair of the Board of Trustees, added:
“This decision reflects the reality of how caring works today. Carers and those they support are not always in the same place, and our role is to respond to that need. The new name better represents who we are and ensures we remain focused on supporting carers wherever that need arises.”
Signpost provides a wide range of support, including carer assessments, benefits advice, wellbeing activities, counselling, and respite opportunities, alongside innovative programmes such as its Therapeutic and Wellbeing Hub and Think Carer training for employers.
As the charity celebrates its 40th anniversary, it will also be launching a series of activities and events to recognise the contribution of carers and the impact of its work over the past four decades. This year also sees the organisation nominated as the Charity Partner of the 2026 Stockport Business Awards.
