Leading planning consultancy Barton Willmore has secured planning permission on behalf of Brookfield Hydro Motors Ltd, for a retail development at London Road South in Poynton, Cheshire.
The proposed development will see the demolition of a locally listed 1930’s cinema building which was converted to form a car repair workshop and a bar with restaurant. The building has remained disused for a number of years falling into disrepair, and is not recognised as having any special architectural or historical merit.

A previous planning application was submitted to Cheshire East Council in November 2007 by Tesco Stores Ltd for the development of a supermarket, but the application was refused in early 2008..
The new proposal involves the redevelopment of this prominent site in the centre of Poynton for a foodstore and other retail floorspace It has been designed with high quality materials in keeping with the local area.
Chris Edge, Associate in Barton Willmore’s Manchester office, said:
“There is a contentious planning history to this site, with Tesco having previously been refused planning permission.. However, during our pre-application discussions with Poynton Town Council and local people, it was clear that there was overwhelming local support for the proposed development.”
He adds:
“The local community made clear that given the condition of the unoccupied buildings, the site is in desperate need of improvement and regeneration. The proposed development will be a significant improvement over the existing use of the site.”
