Stockport Council is recruiting for a Head of Climate Action to ensure the borough does its part to address the global climate emergency.
The newly created role will take ownership of Stockport Council’s Stockport CAN (Climate Action Now) strategy which sets out the action the local authority will take over the next five years in order to meet its 2038 carbon neutrality target.
Stockport’s action plan on climate change consists of seven areas of action for the next five years:
- Stockport Council CAN, building climate action into all of the council’s work
- Sustainable financial appraisal, integrating climate action into financial decisions
- Climate friendly borough, encouraging action from businesses and the local community
- Low carbon buildings
- Renewable energy
- Sustainable transport
- Natural environment
While a global issue, recent severe flooding events in Stockport, which are likely to become more frequent in coming years, have demonstrated the impact the climate crisis is having locally. The new position of Head of Climate Action will take a leadership role within Stockport Council to embed the cultural shift required to deliver on the borough’s climate target. Already being delivered in the plan include Stockport Homes’ interactive environmental awareness course and £20 million LED Lighting and Energy Efficiency project for its street lighting.
Further information about Stockport CAN is available from the Stockport Council website.
