The Greater Manchester Business Growth Hub is running an expert-led workshop in Stockport on 28 April to help manufacturers reduce material use, embedded energy and waste in their packaging.
The half-day workshop has been organised by the Hub’s Green Growth service, which provides fully-funded support to help SMEs in Greater Manchester reduce their environmental impact, become more innovative and take advantage of the growing market for low carbon and environmental goods and services.
Delegates will be introduced to the principles of eco-design, which focuses on the environmental considerations for products and packaging in order to reduce overall lifecycle impacts, improve performance and reduce costs.
The workshop is part of a new programme of support to help companies develop innovative approaches to designing out waste and boosting competitiveness at all stages of the product/packaging lifecycle.
The workshop will cover:
- What is packaging eco-design?
- Regulatory requirements
- Principles and tools
- Product protection and handling
- Testing packaging
- Packaging materials
- Reusable (transit) packaging
Claire Scott, environmental business advisor at the Growth Hub, said: “The UK produces around ten million tonnes of packaging waste each year. Packaging eco-design can minimise overall lifecycle impacts of packaging, whilst maintaining or improving performance and cutting costs.
“This workshop will benefit any Greater Manchester manufacturer or packaging business that wants to optimise packaging to reduce material use and waste, minimise packaging spend and cut transport costs.”
The day will be led by Mark Hilton from Eunomia Consulting Ltd, who has 32 years’ experience in industry and environmental consultancy, specialising in resource efficiency, circular economy, sustainable procurement, product stewardship, eco-design and environmental training.
