UK NEWS & HEADLINES:
New Oxford-Astra Zeneca Covid vaccine begins rollout across UK
An 82 year old dialysis patient is the first person to receive the new vaccine at Oxford’s Churchill Hospital. Six hospital trusts – in Oxford, London, Sussex, Lancashire and Warwickshire – are beginning to administer the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab on Monday, with 530,000 doses ready for use.
Most other available doses will be sent to hundreds of GP-led services and care homes across the UK later in the week, according to the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). Health Secretary Matt Hancock told BBC Breakfast the Oxford vaccine rollout was a “pivotal moment” in the fight against coronavirus, saying: “It’s going to be a tough few weeks ahead, but this is the way out.”
First people to receive Oxford University/AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine today (4 January 2021)
The first people will receive the Oxford University/AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine today (4 January 2021) as the NHS rapidly expands COVID-19 vaccination programmes across the UK.
BBC: PM warns restrictions could get tougher to ease rising infection levels
Regional restrictions in England are “probably about to get tougher” to curb rising Covid infections, the prime minister has warned. Boris Johnson told the BBC stronger measures may be required in parts of the country in the coming weeks.
He said this included the possibility of keeping schools closed, although this is not “something we want to do”. It comes as the UK recorded more than 50,000 new confirmed Covid cases for the sixth day in a row, with 54,990 announced yesterday.
An additional 454 deaths within 28 days of a positive test result have also been reported, meaning the total by this measure is now above 75,000.
Speaking on BBC One’s Andrew Marr Show, Mr Johnson said he stuck by his previous prediction that the situation would be better by the spring, and he hoped “tens of millions” would be vaccinated in the next three months. But he added: “It may be that we need to do things in the next few weeks that will be tougher in many parts of the country. I’m fully, fully reconciled to that. And I bet the people of this country are reconciled to that because, until the vaccine really comes on stream in a massive way, we’re fighting this virus with the same set of tools.”
UK Government Business Secretary reveals what Brexit means for business
A message from the Business Secretary: A deal with the EU has been reached and businesses should take action.
“I am delighted that we have agreed a deal with the European Union and I am confident that the United Kingdom will thrive outside the EU and cement its position as the best place in the world to start, grow and run a business. The deal with the EU means the UK can now regulate in a manner that suits the UK economy and UK businesses – doing things in a more innovative and effective way, without being bound by EU rules. As with any major change, there will be challenges as we adjust to new ways of doing business with the EU. Government will be there to support you to adapt and to capitalise on the opportunities created by this deal. While the deal secures us tariff-free access to EU markets, you should still check what you need to do to allow your business operations to run smoothly. The new rules apply from 11pm tonight (31st December) so you should take any actions as soon as possible in the new year.
- Visit gov.uk/transition and use the Brexit checker tool for a personalised list of actions.
- Our business readiness bulletins will be continuing, with important updates for your business – sign up now.
- Make sure you check the latest Northern Ireland Protocol guidance, if you move goods into, out of, or through Northern Ireland.
2020 has undoubtedly been one of the most challenging years in living memory. However, the resilience and determination displayed by UK businesses this year has only increased my confidence that 2021 will be the start of an exciting and prosperous new chapter for our nation.”

UK property experts – predictions for 2021:
Head of UK residential at Knight Frank:
With 2020 wrapped up and many anticipating the year ahead, Tom Bill, head of UK residential research at Knight Frank, provides commentary on how the property market will fare in 2021. “It is fair to assume that the first four months of 2021 will bear little resemblance to the rest of the year. Such a diverse range of factors will pull the UK property market in different directions early next year that buyers and sellers are likely to respond in an equally wide-ranging way. Any useful assessment of what comes next can take place later in the year. The autumn selling season will provide early clues as to what the post-Covid ‘normal’ looks like.
Leading experts unveil predictions for the UK housebuilding sector:
After a tumultuous 2020, forecasts for the future of the new homes industry fluctuate between optimism and concern, but confidence is gradually being reinstated with the start of the vaccine rollout across the UK. Here, in an attempt to cut through the statistics and shed some light on the current state of play, leading experts from the industry look into their crystal globes with their predictions for the year ahead.
Phil Spencer: What challenges lie ahead as 2021 gets underway?
Following a turbulent 2020 in which the property market and the professionals working within it excelled in the face of unprecedented upheaval, we now enter 2021 with the optimism that only a new year can bring. The start of each year represents a good time to look ahead at the calendar and pinpoint potential challenges and obstacles. Due to the fallout from 2020 and its ongoing impact, this year is shaping up to be an unusual mix of caution and enthusiasm. Taking this into account, below is an overview of three key themes which could define the next 12 months for estate and letting agents..
RETAIL:
The Crisis in Retailing: Closures and Job Losses from Centre for Retail Research: The effect of the coronavirus lockdown came on top of retail’s existing problems. It has been a hammer blow against the sector. Government advice to stay at home, avoid shops, pubs and restaurants was followed a few days later by the lockdown and closure of most stores. The Centre for Retail Research has revised its figures to show the impact on jobs in retail and the number of stores being closed (see below). The Economic Forecast for the Sector is that lost sales in 2020 will amount to £17,281bn and retail’s Annual Sales Total will fall by -4.6% this year (see Economic Forecast https://www.retailresearch.org/retail-forecast.html) Hence in 2020 our revised figures are that 20,622 stores will close (against 16,073 in 2019) and job losses will rise to 235,704 people (against 143,128 last year) [forecast prepared on 31 March 2020].
