COP26:
More than 30 financial institutions to end funding deforestation
More than 100 leaders will commit to halt and reverse forest loss and land degradation by 2030 at an event convened by the Prime Minister at COP26 today. The pledge is backed by almost £14bn ($19.2bn) in public and private funding.
In addition, CEOs from more than 30 financial institutions with over $8.7tril of global assets – including Aviva, Schroders and Axa – will also commit to eliminate investment in activities linked to deforestation. Prime Minister Boris Johnson is expected to say at the Forest & Land Use event at COP26 today leaders have signed a landmark agreement to protect and restore the earth’s forests.
Green investment brings big opportunities for construction sector
The COP26 conference and the renewed commitment by the UK and other governments to hasten the move towards net zero will have a major impact on key construction markets. Whilst the messages coming from Glasgow will add fresh urgency to the UK construction industry’s actions to cut emissions, it will also highlight the potential for additional new work particularly in housing repair and maintenance, building refurbishment and electricity generation and distribution.
The growth of electric vehicles has doubled over the past year to 280,000 and is set to rise dramatically in coming years ahead of the phasing out of new petrol and diesel cars from 2030. The Government has pledged to invest £1.3 billion to speed up the roll out of charging infrastructure, with rapid charge points on motorways and major roads and more on-street charge facilities. Yet there are already big opportunities in the sector. Glenigan has identified around 5,000 projects that include electric charge points over the past year, ranging from home installations to major new business and residential schemes.
In a video message on Monday, the Queen urged leaders attending the summit to “rise above the politics of the moment” to create a “safer, stabler future” for the planet.
Naturalist Sir David Attenborough urged delegates to “turn tragedy into triumph”
US President Joe Biden said the summit represented an “incredible opportunity” but warned: “None of us can escape the worst… if we fail to seize this moment”
India pledged a net-zero target for 2070 – 20 years later than the summit target – while China failed to make major new commitments
UK NEWS UPDATES:
Committee chairs will also be asked to take a stronger role in ensuring MPs comply with coronavirus rules. A parliamentary spokesperson said that “recent increases in Covid across the country… are also being reflected in Parliament”.
The measures will be reviewed in two weeks’ time. Last week, face coverings became mandatory for staff employed by the House of Commons, unless they have a legitimate exemption – but it was left up to individual MPs to decide whether to cover their faces or not. MPs are not employed by the Commons authorities and cannot be forced to wear masks – although they have been encouraged to do so by the Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle and unions representing parliamentary workers.
Over eight million people in the UK receive COVID-19 booster jabs
More than 820,000 boosters have been administered in the last three days, as the government urges people to get their booster as soon as possible
Boosters available at walk-in-sites across UK
Boosters are now being given at walk-in vaccination sites with no appointment needed as the NHS aims to ramp up jabs uptake ahead of a “challenging” winter. People are advised to use the NHS online walk-in finder to check where their nearest centre is and whether it is offering boosters, vaccines for 12-15 year-olds, or anyone aged 16 and over.

Shortages of semi-conductors impacts UK car manaufacturing – worst since 1982
UK car production fell -41.5% in September, the third consecutive month of decline, with 67,169 cars manufactured – the worst performing September since 1982 – according to the latest figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Output continues to be hampered by the production stoppages caused by the ongoing global shortage of semiconductors as well as the loss of production capacity arising from the closure of one of the UK’s larger plants. While yesterday’s Budget confirmed £817 million of funding for the transition in automotive manufacturing and business rate relief on renewable energy, the industry continues to battle against the ongoing effects of the pandemic.
PROPERTY:
Average rents dip but still showing annual hike
the average rent in the UK is now £1,059, down a modest 0.2 per cent from a month ago. However, the annual figure is still up by 8.7 per cent. The biggest regional change over the past year is in Wales with a huge 12.9 per cent increase.
Chris Turner, head of business development for Homelet and Let Alliance, says:
“In normal market conditions, we might see spikes in rental values for desirable or emerging areas, but we’re still seeing a really high demand for all property in the lettings market; that’s now the case in most parts of the UK. With fewer new properties coming up to rent when compared to pre-pandemic levels, we can expect the trends we see continuing throughout 2022.”
