STOCKPORT GRANT SCHEMES:
Stockport Council launches new Additional Restrictions Grant (ARG) for businesses facing continued challenges from impact of coronavirus
Stockport Council has opened applications for its Additional Restrictions Grant scheme, allowing businesses that remain negatively affected by the coronavirus pandemic to access further financial support. The Additional Restrictions Grant supports businesses that are not covered by other grant schemes or where additional funding is needed. You can apply for the Additional Restrictions Grant if your trading levels continue to be negatively impacted by coronavirus (COVID-19). The ARG scheme will be regularly reviewed. The Council reserves the right to amend and/or extend the eligibility criteria, at any point to reflect the available funding remaining and / or further government restrictions being imposed. Any revisions will be incorporated into updated guidance held on the Council website.
Locality Boost Grant
The Council is also offering a further opportunity for businesses in local areas to access a Locality Boost Grant for their area if they did not do so in the first round of these grants. The Locality Boost Grant is for district centre trading associations or their equivalent. District centre trading associations can bid for your local area to run events to drive footfall that will support local businesses that are reopening. If the local area does not have a trading association that can lead the bid, an equivalent lead accountable body or local business will need to be agreed by businesses in that area. They will then lead as the single point of contact for their area. Only one application for each local area will be accepted. Further information on the Locality Boost Grant and how to apply is available at this link Locality Boost Grant – Stockport Council”

UK NEWS UPDATES:
The Office for National Statistics said consumer spending increased as Britain continued to emerge from lockdown. But that was offset by falls in other areas of the economy, leaving growth for the three months at 1.3%. It means the economy is 2.1% smaller than in the final three months of 2019, before the coronavirus pandemic hit. Sterling fell to its lowest level of 2021 against the dollar on Thursday following the news. Grant Fitzner, ONS chief economist, said service growth expanded, helped by house buyers rushing to do deals before the end of the stamp duty holiday. “However, these were partially offset by falls in both the manufacture and sale of cars. Notably, business investment remained well down on pre-pandemic levels in the three months to September,” he said.
Medication break may boost vaccine efficiency
An important trial will test how to boost Covid jab protection in vulnerable patients whose immune systems are weakened by drugs they need for other health conditions. About 1.3 million people in the UK are on methotrexate for conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and psoriasis. It stops flare-ups but can make the body less able to fight infections or respond to vaccines. The team will check if a two-week drug holiday timed to vaccination will help. A previous study from Korea showed that a fortnight’s break from methotrexate immediately after the flu vaccine increased the patients’ immune response to that jab.
Latest REACT-1 study findings show rise in infection rates
There were 1,021 positives from 67,208 swabs, giving a prevalence of 1.72%.
This represents the highest overall prevalence of REACT-1 since it began in May 2020. This is more than 2-fold higher than prevalence in the last report (9 to 27 September 2021), which was 0.83%. The reproduction rate of the virus (‘R’) is estimated at 1.12. Rates are up in every region over this period except Yorkshire and the Humber. Highest prevalence was observed in those aged 5 to 12 years at 5.85% and those aged 13 to 17 years at 5.75%. Prevalence for those aged 45 to 54 and 35 to 44 were the next highest, at 1.53% and 1.48% respectively. In larger households of 5 people or more the rate of infection was 3.68%, compared to 0.78% in single-person households.

- More than 40 countries committed to move away from coal – but the world’s biggest users such as China and the US did not sign up
- Some new pots of money were announced to help developing countries adapt to climate change and deal with the damage and loss it brings – but many say it’s not enough
- A new alliance saw a small group of countries commit to setting a date to ending oil and gas use but the UK wasn’t part of it.

Testing plays a key role in our effort to fight and contain COVID-19; helping to mitigate the spread of the disease by identifying infected individuals and variants quickly and helping to break chains of transmission. Bailiff-enforced evictions suspended over Christmas season
It’s understood there will be a Christmas truce with tenants not enduring bailiff-enforced evictions between December 13 and January 10. HM Courts and Tribunal has confirmed that this will follow the pattern of previous years. In line with formal protocol the Lord Chancellor will inform the High Court Enforcement Officers’ Association – this association, in turn, will instruct its bailiff members not to enforce evictions during the truce period. An informal truce of this kind, typically lasting two weeks, has occurred in recent years but won extensive publicity last year, at the height of the pandemic, when the truce was effectively an extension of the long-running eviction ban.
