Trafford and Stockport College Group is celebrating the achievements of its GCSE students, who have shown resilience, adaptability and determination to succeed in their studies.
The Group’s high grades in English and Maths were above national averages, reflecting the excellent teaching and learning across its colleges.
For many, these results are a significant milestone in their journey of moving to the UK and adapting to a new education system.
Among the many success stories this year are students who have embraced new opportunities and overcome challenges with the support of staff and classmates.
Lok Wang Hui moved to the UK from Hong Kong in November 2024 and joined Trafford College on its GCSE programme, studying English, Maths, Biology and Chemistry, and said:
“I really value the support I’ve had along the way. All of my teachers have helped me a lot, especially Saqib. I’m impressed by how supportive students are of each other, and how everyone works hard to achieve the best they can.”
Lok is now deciding whether to progress onto A Levels or a BTEC, with the goal of studying at university in the future.
Gabriella Rae arrived in the UK from Australia in May last year, having previously lived in Scotland and Wales. Facing differences in the education system, Gabriella found it difficult to find a school offering the GCSE route, until Trafford College provided the opportunity. She studied English Language, Mathematics, Biology and Religious Education, and is now progressing to a Level 3 National Extended Diploma in Sports Coaching and Development. She said:
“All the teachers were very kind, patient, and understanding of everyone’s situations. They were always happy to help us and answer our questions. The college did their best to support our journey and help us do well in our exams.”
Ritag Ishag came to the UK from Egypt in September 2024 and started her GCSEs in November, taking English, Maths, Arabic, Biology and Chemistry. Despite having less time to prepare, she settled in well and felt supported throughout. Ritag is continuing her academic journey by studying A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Physics, with the ambition of becoming a doctor.
Setayesh Ali Fard moved from Iran to England 18 months ago and enrolled at Trafford College to study Maths, English, Chemistry and Citizenship.
“All the staff were really helpful,” he said. Setayesh will continue his education by taking A Levels in Politics, Psychology and History.
James Scott, CEO of Trafford and Stockport College Group, said:
“These GCSE results demonstrate the power of opportunity. Trafford and Stockport College Group is committed to creating pathways for all learners, whether they are local students or those who have recently joined our community from overseas. It’s fantastic to see so many of our learners now progressing onto A Levels, vocational qualifications and apprenticeships, and we are excited to support them on the next stage of their journey.”
Carmen Gonzalez-Eslava, Principal of Trafford and Stockport College Group, added:
“What makes this year’s results so special is the variety of student stories behind them. From learners who have only been in the UK a matter of months, to those who are continuing their education with us after overcoming real challenges, every success reflects hard work and ambition. We’re proud that our colleges are places where students feel welcomed, supported and inspired to achieve their goals.
“We are especially proud of our achievements in English and maths, where our high grades are above national averages. This reflects the great teaching and learning across our colleges, the dedication of our skilled teachers, and the excellent academic and pastoral support we provide. Most importantly, these results mean that more of our students can now progress confidently into their chosen courses and futures.”
