UK NEWS UPDATES:
Critical workers to take daily lateral flow tests
Around 100,000 critical workers are set to take daily Covid tests in order to reduce the spread of the virus to colleagues. Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it will be for key industries including food processing, transport and the border force.
PM: Plan B to continue for another 3 weeks
England’s current Plan B rules will continue for now, Boris Johnson has confirmed, as new figures show a record one in 15 people had Covid on New Year’s Eve.
In an update to MPs, the prime minister said the Covid measures will be reviewed again by 26 January. The rules cannot be scrapped completely because hospital admissions are rising rapidly, he added. Omicron continues to spread widely, with some hospitals struggling to cope. A record 3.7 million people in the UK had Covid in the week to New Year’s Eve – an extra million more than the week before – according to estimates from the Office for National Statistics.
Pre-departure travel tests to be scrapped
From 04:00 GMT on Friday, fully vaccinated travellers coming to England will no longer have to take a test before they travel. And from Sunday, rather than taking a PCR test on day two of arrival, they can take a cheaper lateral flow.
The rules for self-isolating on arrival will also change. Under the new rules:
- From 04:00 GMT on Friday 7 January, people who are fully vaccinated and those aged under-18 will no longer need to take a test two days before travelling to England from countries outside the UK and the Common Travel Area. On arrival, they will have to take a PCR test but they will no longer have to self-isolate while awaiting the result
- From 04:00 GMT on Sunday 9 January they will only have to take a lateral flow test instead of a PCR test on day two. But this test must be bought from a private test provider – free NHS tests are not allowed
- Unvaccinated passengers will need to continue to take a pre-departure test, PCR tests on day two and day eight, and self-isolate for 10 days
PCR test not needed after positive lateral flow test under new plans
Covid testing rules are to be eased for people without symptoms, who will no longer need to confirm a positive lateral flow test with a PCR.
While Covid levels are high, people can be confident that rapid tests are highly accurate, the UK Health Security Agency said. The change will come into force in England next week and across the rest of the UK within days. It will be reviewed when coronavirus levels in the population drop below 1%. Around 4% of people are currently infected with coronavirus, according to the Office for National Statistics. Under the new guidance, anyone in England who receives a positive lateral flow device (LFD) test result should report their result on gov.uk and must self-isolate immediately but will not need to take a follow-up PCR test.
Confirmatory PCR tests to be temporarily suspended for positive lateral flow test results
From 11 January in England, people who receive positive lateral flow device (LFD) test results for COVID-19 will be required to self-isolate immediately.

REGIONAL & LOCAL NEWS:
MAG CEO welcomes relaxation of travel rules
Manchester Airports Group CEO, Charlie Cornish, has welcomed the relaxation of travel rules meaning fully vaccinated arrivals in the UK no longer need a negative Covid-19 test before departure in order to enter the country. From Sunday 9th January, fully vaccinated travellers entering the UK will be able to use a lateral flow test, taken on or before their second day in the country, instead of a more costly PCR test and extended period of self-isolation, and will no longer be required to provide a negative Covid-19 test result before travel. With the Omicron variant now dominant in the UK, measures implemented to curb its spread from overseas have now been deemed by the departments of Health and Transport as no longer effective or necessary for controlling the transmission of Covid-19.

MANUFACTURING:
Electric car sales soar but shortage of chips hit market
Sales of electric vehicles soared last year, but the market as a whole failed to recover from the Covid pandemic. More electric cars were registered in 2021 than in the previous five years combined, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). Yet the industry body said much more investment is needed in charging infrastructure. Meanwhile an acute shortage of computer chips left dealers struggling to get hold of many new conventional models.
PROPERTY:
Covid race for space helps boost country house property market
High-value properties were the top-performers in the country house market in 2021, according to an agency that majors in this sector. In the 12 months to November 2021 vs 12 months to November 2019 new prospective buyers in the £5m+ value band increased by 137 per cent according to Knight Frank. Offers accepted in this period were up by 107 per cent and exchanges by 84 per cent. In the overall country house market, which has enjoyed its strongest performance since the global financial crisis, new prospective buyers increased by 48 per cent, offers accepted by 40 per cent and exchanges by 44 per cent in the same period. “I’ve never known a time like it in 30-plus years. Leading up to the pandemic the top-end was pretty flat, however Covid has seen a resurgence of interest in the country house market, with buyers attracted to the high quality of life on offer” says Rupert Sweeting, head of national country sales at Knight Frank.
RETAIL:
Next warns of higher prices as costs soar
Next has said it will raise its prices this year to offset increased wages as well as higher shipping costs. It said prices for its spring and summer clothing and homeware ranges would rise by 3.7% from a year earlier, while it expects a 6% increase for autumn and winter goods. Its forecast came as it said sales for the three months to 25 December were up 20% compared with pre-pandemic 2019.
Next also upped its profit forecast for the year. It now expects to make an extra £22m, taking annual profits to £822m, which would be nearly 10% higher than in 2019.
£70m more Christmas sales than expected for Next
Next has registered £70 million more sales than expected over Christmas after a rise in online orders of party dresses and occasionwear. The fashion retailer said it now expected to make £822 million in annual profits, £22 million more than previously expected and almost 10% ahead of pre-pandemic levels. In the eight weeks to Christmas, Next said its sales rose 20% on 2019 despite suffering “materially lower” levels of stocks than it had hoped for.
B&M has been buoyed by a strong third quarter and Christmas performance.
Total revenue for Q3 – the 13 weeks to 25 December 2021 – was down only slightly from £1.398bn the previous year to £1.395bn. This was driven by revenues increasing at Heron Foods and in its France brand. B&M UK sales fell from £1.21bn to £1.18bn. Chief executive Simon Arora said: “The group has delivered a very strong Golden Quarter, with our two-year like-for-like performance demonstrating strong retention of new customers.
