Stockport Council is supporting Earth Hour 2014 by switching off external lighting on two large town centre landmarks: the Viaduct and Stockport Town Hall.
The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) Earth Hour 2014 will take place for one hour from 8.30pm on Saturday 29th March. The WWF is asking households and businesses all over the world to turn off all non-essential lights and appliances during this hour to raise awareness of climate change.
To support this, the Council is turning off external floodlights on the Town Hall and the viaduct, and is asking its employees and residents to take part by switching off their lights at home for an hour.
Councillor Stuart Bodsworth, Executive Member for Communities and Sustainability, said:
“We are delighted to be supporting Earth Hour 2014 and hope it succeeds in sending a powerful message to people to take positive action on climate change and to protect the environment. We ask that residents go beyond the hour and make a long-lasting commitment to live more sustainably – even small changes such as recycling more, switching off lights and insulating your home can make a real difference.”
Last year in the UK over 10 million people got involved, joining 3,500 schools and over 1,200 businesses and organisations. From the London Eye and Houses of Parliament, to Edinburgh Castle and Piccadilly Circus, hundreds of the country’s most famous landmarks were plunged into darkness.
