Stockport Council and the Mayor of Greater Manchester have launched a public consultation on a bold new vision for the east of Stockport town centre.
The town has published its proposed Strategic Regeneration Framework for parts of the town centre to the east of the A6, detailing what will be built, where, and how it will deliver for the people of Stockport. Plans include at least 4,000 new homes, a new school, hospital, and new green spaces.
The consultation also seeks views on expanding the boundaries of the Stockport Mayoral Development Corporation (MDC) to include the east of the town centre. The MDC, established in 2019, is already delivering over 1,200 new homes, 170,000 sq ft office space, alongside the new transport interchange and Viaduct Park in the Town Centre West area.
Local residents and stakeholders are now being invited to have their say on the changes, which aim to:
- Deliver at least 4,000 new homes for people of all ages
- Create more green spaces and community facilities to support health and wellbeing
- Champion sustainability and climate resilience, helping meet the Council’s net zero targets
- Support economic growth, new jobs, and modern workspaces
- Improve community connections and bring neighbourhoods closer together
- Celebrate Stockport’s heritage through high-quality design that reflects local character
- Expand the MDC’s boundary to build on the momentum already created in the west of the town centre
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“Stockport is a town on the move—and we’re just getting started. We’ve already made huge progress in Town Centre West, and now we’re ready to bring that same ambition to the east.
“This is about more than housing—it’s about creating greener spaces, stronger communities, and a town centre that works for everyone. With a focus on sustainability, wellbeing, and inclusive growth, we’re building a place where people want to live, work and thrive.”
Andy Burnham, Mayor of Greater Manchester, added:
“The first five years of Stockport’s Mayoral Development Corporation show what’s possible when we put place and people first. Together, we’ve transformed Town Centre West—delivering thousands of new homes, a state-of-the-art transport interchange, vibrant commercial spaces and essential social infrastructure.
“But we’re just getting started. Now, we’re asking residents to help shape the future of Town Centre East. This is your chance to have a real say in how your town grows—ensuring that the next phase of regeneration reflects the needs, values and ambitions of the whole community.”
Rhian Davitt-Jones, Director at CBRE, said:
“CBRE is delighted to have supported Stockport Council and Stockport MDC in preparing a new vision Stockport Town Centre East. This SRF will help to unlock thousands of new high-quality homes, the creation of exemplar and sustainable neighbourhoods and deliver true place-making benefits for the Town Centre and Borough as a whole.”
Teams from Stockport Council will be at locations in the town centre in the coming weeks to share information and speak to people about the plans, including at:
- Foodie Friday on Friday, May 30.
- Makers Market in Stockport on Saturday, June 14.
- Merseyway Shopping Centre (outside Specsavers) on Thursday, June 19 (11am to 3pm)
Copies of the draft Strategic Regeneration Framework document and questionnaires will also be available to read at Stockport Council’s reception at Stopford House and at Stockroom (from Saturday 24th May).
The consultation closes at midnight on Thursday 26 June, and residents and stakeholders can share their views with Stockport Council online via the One Stockport website.
