Stockport Council acknowledged the achievements of its young people at an awards ceremony attended by 350 people. The Stockport Young Stars event was held at Stockport Town Hall on Thursday 5th December and was organised by the Council’s 14-19 Services.
The event recognises young people who are in education and training and have achieved positive experiences and accomplishments. The nominees are proposed and nominated by the institution where they are taught, trained or are employed.
Awards to learners were presented by:
- Gillian Easson, Chairman of Stockport NHS Foundation Trust
- Danny Pearson, Principal of Aquinas
- John Myers of the National Apprenticeship Service
- Sherann Hillman of PIPS (Parents in Partnership, Stockport)
- Pete Lamb of The Dodd Group
- Sue Souter of Souter P.R.
- Richard Bates, Stockport Council’s Service Director for Education
The event also includes local employers who are involved with the ‘14-19 Agenda’ by providing education and training including Apprenticeships, work experience, and mock interviews. Learners at schools, colleges and training providers competed in eight categories.

Councillor Shan Alexander, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong Learning and Achievement, said:
“I would like to congratulate everybody who was nominated for an award and all the winners for their fine achievements.
“This event is a great way to celebrate Stockport’s talented young people – their contributions in the community and successes of people who made great progress since starting in education, training or employment, or improved their knowledge and skills.”
The Young Stars winners were as follows:
- Apprentice of the Year – Jack Armour, Stockport Council
- Contribution to the community – Adam Hopkins from Harrytown R.C. High School
- Further Education learner of the year – Joel Rogers from Aquinas College
- Key stage 4 learner of the year – Rose Cleary from Werneth School
- Outstanding Achievement – Adam Waldron from Hazel Grove High School
- Overcoming adversity pre 16 – Robyn Searle from Marple Hall School
- Overcoming adversity post 16 – Dannielle Xenophontos from Marple Sixth Form College
- Special Educational Needs learner of the year – Kieran Kelly from St. James’ R.C. High School
Employers were presented with the ‘Working with Young People’ Award by Councillor Shan Alexander. The awards presented to employers were:

A raffle was drawn on the evening with proceeds donated to the Mayor’s charities of Stockport Alzheimer’s Society and Beechwood Cancer Care. A total of £811 was raised.
