Stockport Council is working in partnership with other agencies to help raise awareness of the challenges faced by people with dementia when they are out and about in the local community.
The Council in partnership with NHS Stockport CCG, Stockport’s Dementia Champion’s network, EDUCATE and the Alzheimer’s Society held an information event in Marple Town Centre as part of Dementia Awareness Week.
People attending the event had the chance to find out more about dementia friendly communities and give their ideas for a more dementia aware and friendly neighbourhood. Organisations also promoted the help and support available for the carers of people with dementia.
The creation of dementia friendly communities is one of the three challenges set out in the Prime Minister’s Challenge on Dementia to support people with dementia to live well and engage with their communities.
Councillor John Pantall, Stockport Council’s Executive Member for Health and Wellbeing said: “Dementia is a local health priority and I am pleased we are raising awareness of these issues. By working together we can support people with dementia and their carers to live active lives in the community. Local organisations, neighbours and staff in local shops can all offer help and support that can make a huge difference to the lives of people with dementia.”
