Banners encouraging people to start thinking about becoming foster carers with Stockport Council are being displayed at local parks across the borough.
Situated in busy children’s play areas and tennis courts, it is hoped the banners will raise awareness about the need for more foster carers and increase the number of people considering fostering. Cllr Wendy Meikle, Stockport Council Cabinet Member for Children, Families & Education, explained:
“We urgently need more foster carers here in Stockport to ensure children can stay close to their communities and thrive in loving family homes. Our parks are a great place where our local residents enjoy being outdoors, playing sports and having fun. We’re hoping some of these local residents who visit the parks will see our banners and consider how they could be the one to help make a real difference to a child’s life by becoming a foster carer.”
Signage will be on display at five of Stockport’s parks: Woodbank Park in Offerton; Torkington Park, Hazel Grove; Marple Memorial Park; Bruntwood Park, Cheadle; and Alexandra Park in Edgeley.
Stockport Council is also encouraging businesses to sign up to become Foster Friendly Employers, and adopt HR policies that ensure foster carers are supported by their workplaces to help make it easier for people to start fostering. Employers will receive support and guidance from The Fostering Network, the UK’s leading fostering charity.
Stockport businesses can learn more about how they can become a Fostering Friendly Employer and support young people in care in the borough via the Stockport Council website.
