The potential growth in the smart meter and pre-payment meter market means that Stockport’s Landis+Gyr are set to create an additional 200 jobs over the next four years.
Landis & Gyr currently produces approximately 20,000 units to supply the UK’s big five utility companies, including British Gas, EDF and E.ON. from its manaufacturing base in Stockport.
Landis+Gyr ranks as the worldwide leader in electricity metering with a preeminent position in advanced or “smart metering systems” – an essential component in global efforts to upgrade energy distribution systems and enable power to be distributed more efficiently and reliably.
The firm’s UK & Ireland chief executive Steve Cunningham said demand from consumers looking to lower bills is driving business. He said: “We have a strong market presence in Europe and in particular the UK supplying to all the major utility companies whose end users are more than ever looking towards saving on their energy bills.
“This is turn has increased the demand for smart meters which we expect to grow.
“Our Stockport operation is increasingly growing and we expect to quadruple the size of the business here in the next four years.”
The company has recently produced its three millionth ultra-sonic gas meter, which was presented to its client, Calvin Asset Management, in Stockport, by Mr Cunningham. It is now aiming to reach the four million meter mark as early as next year.
As part of this growth, it has announced it plans to take its staff numbers in Stockport from 300 to around 500.
