Stockport-based interior specialist Innova Design Solutions is launching a survey that aims to reveal an accurate picture of secondary school science labs in the UK.
In 2015, according to a government report, just 85 per cent of the required teacher trainees were recruited to teach the sciences and school science facilities were found to vary dramatically depending on area.
To help build a picture of the overall quality of UK school science labs, Innova is urging science teachers at secondary schools to help by completing a short and engaging survey.
Melanie Laing, director, Innova Design Solutions said: “To preserve the leading-edge the UK has built when it comes to pioneering scientific research and discovery, the government has rightly identified the need to actively promote STEM subjects to pupils.
“Teachers require facilities that empower them to inspire pupils and nurture their potential. And presently, enough is not known about the overall standard of science facilities across the UK.”
The scientific argument for modern, well-planned school environments is compelling. A 2015 study by Salford University found that moving a child from a poor to an effective learning space, could speed their progress by around 1.3 academic sub-levels.
Melanie continues: “It is essential that any discussion about raising the quality and capacity of UK science extends from an accurate picture of the quality and capacity of the teaching infrastructure. Only then can we ensure that targets are realistic and achievable.
“We look forward to working closely with science teachers in what will be a fun and engaging campaign but with serious aims and we would encourage them to complete our survey and share it with colleagues.”
All teachers completing the survey will be entered into a draw for the chance to win a day of shows at their school delivered by science made simple worth up to £650.
