Training young people is a priority for many businesses in Stockport and this award recognises the support, effort and passion given by local business to give young people a good start to their careers.
Marketing Stockport and its members are keen to ensure that young people are given the opportunity to play a major part in the town’s future economy and are proud to sponsor this award; director Helen White commented:
“Stockport is among the top 10 towns and cities in the UK for talent; it is important that we retain such talent, invest in our future workforce across all sectors and try to stem the leakage out of the area.”
The shortlisted companies are; DJS Research, Jacobs Engineering and Trolex.

DJS Research is a full service market research agency which carries out both domestic and international research with consumers and businesses across a range of sectors. The company is a family-owned business which was set-up in 2001 and has grown every year since. DJS employs around 200 people, around 30% of which are aged 25 or under and values the impact that young people have had on the business. DJS strives to have a positive influence on young people with its apprenticeship scheme, graduate scheme, work experience placements and internships. The company nurtures young people in order to retain talent and offers fantastic incentives in terms of training and promotion opportunities. The family is not afraid to give responsibility to young people and often allow them to lead in their own areas.
Jacobs Engineering is one of the world’s largest and most
diverse providers of technical, professional and construction
services. It invests in young people, particularly through
apprenticeships, and has employed around 40 new apprentices
in the UK this year.
A range of courses at local colleges are available to these young
people and Jacobs offers support every step of the way. The
company actively promotes career progression within the
business, which in turn keeps talented young people in our
region.
It also supports various youth and education initiatives in the
area such as SK1, the new technical STEM school in Stockport
and PEEBS, the People Education Employers Brokerage Service
which links employers with Young People in the area.

Trolex offers bespoke safety and
condition monitoring solutions as well
as control systems for mines, tunnels
and other high risk industries. It has a
huge interest in investing in and developing the young people it employs. Trolex shows
its commitment to young people in the excellent training programmes it offers as
well as its staff welfare initiatives.
It has a number of apprentices currently studying an Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering, all of whom will have to attend Stockport College on day release
to gain their level 3 qualifications. The opportunities given to these young people
can be summarised by the recent success of one of the company’s apprentices who, in his first year of study, has been appointed for a newly created Leadership role.
