Stockport is among 16 towns and cities across the UK that will benefit from an upgrade in mobile connectivity as network operator, EE, expands its 5G standalone network.
EE launched its 5G standalone network at the start of September in 15 cities, including all four UK capitals, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sheffield.
The additional 16 locations announced today (28th October) will see EE roll-out its 5G standalone network by the end of 2024 to reach more than 21 million people, with Bury, Wigan and Ashton-under-Lyne also set to get the upgrade alongside Stockport in Greater Manchester.
Standalone 5G allows smartphones and tablet users to access an improved internet experience on their 5G enabled device by allowing devices to connect directly to a pure 5G network, rather than via slower 4G connections.
Customers using the EE standalone network will benefit from improved video calls, streaming and online gaming, both in and out of their homes – as well as higher quality voice calls even in congested areas thanks to additional capacity to cope with congestion during major events such as sports matches and concerts. The fast connections also allow for smoother functioning for AI tools and services that can connect more seamlessly to cloud-based servers.
