A planning application has been submitted for the former Cobdens pub in Stockport town centre to be converted into apartments.
The pub building, which has lain empty since 2013, on the corner of Wellington Road South and St Petersgate could be converted into eight one-bedroom and one two-bedroom apartments. The property’s existing basement will be converted to provide communal bin stores and bicycle storage for residents.
Development will preserve the external features of the property, particularly the early 19th frontage of the Cobdens building on Wellington Road South; however, designs also propose the demolition of the former pub’s conservatory within the centre of the cluster of buildings to create an external courtyard for residents and expand the floorspace for residential development. Existing street-level retail units on St Petersgate will be unaffected by the development.
The development of the site for residential will add to a growing pipeline of residential schemes proposed for the Petersgate area of the town centre. The area, including on the opposite side of Wellington Road South within the MDC area, has proved attractive for developers and residents as they are well positioned for access to transport links on the A6, Stockport station and Stockport bus station.
AH2 Developments are the developers behind the plans, alongside Paul Hughes Architects and planning consultants Paul Butler Associates.
