Stockport marketing agency, Platform81, has sponsored a ‘Friendly Bench’ at Stockport County FC’s Edgeley Park grounds to help combat loneliness and foster connections in the community.
The Friendly Bench (pictured, photo courtesy of Stockport County FC) offers a space where people can sit and invite conversation and interaction from others, and is situated on the green verge between the club’s grounds and Hardcastle Road. The benches have been funded by Platform81, and provided by retailer, John Lewis, at a discounted rate.
Nick Wroe, Managing Director at Platform81, said:
“Here at Platform81 we are big supporters of our local club, along with thousands of other Stockport residents.
“We are delighted to have sponsored the benches. Fans meet up regularly at matches and share the current success of the club. But, even as part of a big crowd, some people can still feel isolated and lonely. The Friendly bench is somewhere welcoming, where you can sit and be sure of a friendly face and a warm welcome. Just a few words of can make a big difference to how someone is feeling.”
The Friendly Bench launched ahead of the club’s 8-0 win against Sutton United on December 16th, and hopes to become a focal point at Edgeley Park on match days. Supporters are encouraged to gather and forge connections there as part of the club’s efforts to combat social isolation and loneliness in the wider community in Stockport, and to encourage inclusivity. The bench will be overseen by Stockport County’s dedicated Support Liaison Officer team.
In a post on the club’s website highlighting the launch of the Friendly Bench, Stockport County said:
“We’d like to thank Platform81 and John Lewis for their support in making this initiative a reality. We invite everyone to join us at County’s Friendly Bench, creating a space where a simple hello can make a world of difference.”
