Developers, Britannia Group, have had planning permission approved to convert the former Stockport Probation Centre into 45 one- and two-bedroom apartments.
Stockport Council’s Planning and Highways Regulation Committee has granted planning consent for the development when they met on Thursday 15th August. The development will bring the building, constructed in 1900 and originally used by a grocery wholesaler, back into use after the Probation Centre closed in Autumn 2023.
After purchasing the building in summer 2023, Britannia Group have proposed restore the historic main building on the site, with other later extensions earmarked for demolition to be replaced with sensitively designed modern replacements. A public exhibition on the apartment scheme took place in December at the nearby St Joseph’s Roman Catholic Primary School alongside an online consultation on the plans.
Nick Carter, development director at Britannia Group, said:
“We are thrilled our plans for the former Probation Centre have been approved and we look forward to bringing new homes to Stockport’s thriving town centre.
“I’d like to especially thank the local ward councillors and St Joseph’s RC Primary School who helped us shape our plans.”
The original building will house 13 one-bedroom and five two-bedroom apartments, with 23 one-bedroom and four two-bedroom flats in an additional new building. Ollier Smurthwaite are architects on the scheme; AshtonHale was the planning consultant.
Planning approval for the scheme follows success for Britannia Group in progressing with a similar apartment conversion for Victoria Park Probation Centre in South Manchester, where work began in January this year.
