The Queen’s Baton Relay ahead of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games is coming to Stockport this weekend on Sunday, July 17th and there is a busy schedule of events and activities taking place in the town centre.
The Queen’s Baton Relay has already completed its epic journey across the commonwealth and now is making a 25-day final tour across the UK before arriving in Birmingham for the opening ceremony of the Games.
Through Stockport, the Queen’s Baton will carried by nominated runners who have all shared their own inspiring stories, personal experiences and the challenges they have faced. Members of the public are encouraged to come down to St Peter’s Square for 10am for an array of activities, and to cheer on our runners as part of this historic event.
As the Baton makes its way from St Peter’s Square and through the Market Place, events will be commemorating and celebrating with a host of different groups and organisations such as Active Community Experiences (ACE), who will be getting everyone moving with free multi-sports activities from 10am – 11am. See the full relay route here.
England Netball will also be at St Peter’s Square with their nets, offering people the chance to join in for some fun, free netball activities; beginners are welcome. Furthermore, Kru Mike from Stockport’s Master Sken Muay Thai Academy will be taking part in live demonstrations, showcasing martial arts, and encouraging fitness, skills and mental discipline.
Strawberry Radio, Stockport’s local DAB radio station, will also be on hand to bring the party vibe across their PA system.
Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said:
“We are so excited to be welcoming The Queen’s Baton Relay to Stockport after it’s long journey across the commonwealth, we would love to see St. Peter’s Square bustling with support and full of residents getting involved with our range of physical activities. You can also support our runners, many of whom are from Stockport and the North West, all the way along the route.”
