John Lewis at Cheadle Royal is putting customers first and taking on an 150 temporary staff to provide for the build up to Christmas and its extended shopping hours.
It is hoped many of the positions will be made permanent after the festive period as the store reported that sales this month are already up by 10% on the same period last year.
Nationally, John Lewis said the so-called ‘Mega Monday’ had helped it post a record weekly sales haul last week as online sales jumped by 30%.
It said it recorded its best ever online sales of £7.3m on the first Monday in December, as people returned to work after payday to order online in time for Christmas.
Online sales for the week as a whole were £42m, helping to drive overall sales at the department store chain 15 per cent ahead on the same week last year, at £142m.
Surging online sales at Cheadle Royal were driven by its click and collect service, which enables customers to order online and pick up their items from the store.
