With more businesses making use of mobile apps as part of their processes, Dave Taylor from Stockport-based Amshire IT warns of the growing risk posed by fake app malware.
Installing new apps can’t be avoided.
Messaging tools, browsers and collaboration platforms are part of everyday business life, and that’s not a problem. The real problem is that cyber criminals are now creating fake versions of these popular apps and they are becoming harder to spot.
I am seeing convincing copies of platforms such as WhatsApp, Chrome, Signal and Telegram. They look genuine at first glance, but they may contain hidden malware that can spy on activity, steal data and give attackers access to company systems.
How fake apps reach your team
One of the main ways these dangerous apps spread is through a tactic called SEO poisoning.
Attackers manipulate search results so that their malicious websites appear at the very top of the page, meaning that even cautious users can accidentally click on a fake link, thinking it is the real thing.
What one download can really do
Once installed, fake app malware can:
- capture keystrokes
- monitor browsing activity
- access sensitive business information
- bypass certain security tools
All it takes is one compromised device to put an entire organisation at risk, spreading like wildfire isn’t an exaggeration.
Simple actions that reduce the threat
There are practical steps that significantly lower the chances of infection.
I always recommend downloading apps only from official app stores or trusted company websites that you have typed in yourself. It is equally important to check website addresses carefully, as small spelling changes can often reveal a fake page.
Awareness is your strongest protection
Technology plays a critical role in cyber security, but awareness remains one of the most powerful defences. A short reminder to your team or a quick internal update can prevent a serious incident before it happens.
