Over 600 young people attended an information event organised by Stockport Council during National Apprenticeship Week.
The information event was held on Monday 11th March at Stockport Town Hall.
The event was organised by the Council’s 14-19 Services is aimed at Years 9, 10 and 11 pupils who are undecided about what to do after leaving school. Parents were also encouraged to attend and 16-18 year olds who want to find out about the options available locally in Further Education, Apprenticeships or employment.
The event was particularly important given that the Government has raised the Participation Age. This means all young people will be expected to continue in education or training until the end of the academic year in which they turn 17 and until their 18th birthday, from 2015.
Councillor Shan Alexander, Stockport
Council’s Executive Member for Lifelong
Learning and Achievement, said:
“This was a highly successful event
which I was delighted to attend. It was
great to see so many young people
keen to learn more about
apprenticeships.
“People attending were able to meet
representatives from local colleges,
training providers, employers, the National
Apprenticeship Service and the Council’s
Services for Young People face-to-face to
discuss what they can do after leaving
school or college.”

The event also co-coincided with the launch of Stockport’s 50:50 Apprenticeship Scheme 2013. The scheme offers 50 grants of £1,000 to employers who take on a 16-18 year old Stockport resident who is not currently in education, employment or training.
