Stockport Council has issued a call for members of the public to submit sites that may be suitable for development or that they wish to see protected in the borough.
Sites suitable for protection could include open spaces that should be preserved for recreational use or business sites that support jobs. Sites suitable for development would be those that could provide space for new housing or see their current use changed in some way, such as for business or leisure use.
Submissions from the public will help contribute to the borough’s Local Plan, a statutory document used to inform planning decisions and define areas suitable for new housing and commercial development.
Stockport residents can submit details of sites to Stockport Council via an online form, available via the council’s consultation portal, where further details about information needed to make a submission can also be found. The Call for Sites closes on 2nd February 2025.
The launch of the 2024/25 Call for Sites follows recent publication of new mandatory housing targets for Stockport, that are almost double previous targets. Work on a new Local Plan for the borough has stalled following reveal of higher targets earlier this year before a consultation on a draft Local Plan could begin that avoided greenbelt loss. New higher targets for Stockport make it likely the Council will need to look to previously undeveloped and greenbelt sites to meet housing needs, something it has previously sought to avoid and instead focus on regeneration of the town centre and other brownfield sites.
