UK HEADLINES:
Coronavirus: BBC: Is the UK in a better position than we think?
This is a point made by Prof Carl Heneghan, who heads the centre for evidence-based medicine at Oxford University. He says it is essential to adjust for tests being done and is concerned about what he calls “poor interpretation” of data. Covid cases, he says, simply aren’t rising in any meaningful sense. And even if you just look at the raw number of positive tests, it is worth remembering that the figures seen are way way below what was happening during the peak when an estimated 100,000 infections a day were being seen.
Coronavirus in the UK: BBC: How many confirmed cases are there in your area?
There have been more than 300,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus so far in the UK and more than 46,000 people have died, government figures show. However, these numbers only include people tested, and the actual death toll is higher.
To date there have been 46,299 deaths with another 89 new deaths and 670 new cases reported in the previous 24 hours;

New legislation enforces restrictions across Greater Manchester
Restrictions affecting the Greater Manchester area in a move to stem the rise in new cases of the coronavirus have now become law. It is illegal to enter a house or garden of someone outside your own household. These restrictions are enforceable by law and fines of £100 will be enforced for anyone in the 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester who break the law. Despite being announced to the contrary last week, the new law does not restrict people of different households meeting either inside or outside a pub or restaurant!
What you can be fined for under the Greater Manchester new legislation
The restrictions will be reviewed on a weekly basis. All Stockport residents who are unwell should isolate in line with government guidance and get tested either by emailing testing@stockport.gov.uk, through booking at https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coronavirus-covid-19/testing-and-tracing/get-an-antigen-test-to-check-if-you-have-coronavirus/ or by phoning 119.

Morgan Sindall to repay money received under Covid-19 job retention scheme and confident of second half profits surge
Morgan Sindall has revealed its intension to return all payments it has received under the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.
Morgan Sindall is predicting a bounce-back in profit during the second half of the year as sites returned to 95% productivity across the company.
Results for the half-year to June 30 2020 show Covid-19 caused a drop in pre-tax profit to £13.6m from £35.5m last time as revenue dipped to £1,363m from £1,421m. Morgan Sindall said it can now reinstall financial guidance for the rest of the year and is looking to post pre-tax profits of £50m-£60m in 2020. Chief Executive, John Morgan said: “We now have greater clarity of the extent of the impact of Covid-19 on the current year’s performance and on the assumption of no further significant business interruptions arising from any widespread secondary lockdown, we expect profit before tax for 2020 to be in the range of £50m-£60m.”

Business Growth Hub to manage new small business recovery grant
Expressions of interest are being encouraged from businesses looking for grants of between £1000 and £3000. There is a strong focus on the Visitor Economy sector with at least 25% of the funds going towards this sector. The funding is available through ERDF funds where the fund is for 100% of the costs – there is no client match required. The application process will focus on COVID-19 impacts and how the funding will enable applicants to be more productive. Applicants will need to demonstrate:-
• The client need in relation to COVID-19 impact and how the funding will enable
them to be more productive
• that the client has received two like for like quotes for the support/equipment
• that they are able to pay for this themselves and then claim the money back from
the project
• that they can demonstrate that the money has been spent through bank statement
evidence before grant funding is released
Please be aware that completion of the expression of interest form does not guarantee that a business will be awarded a grant given that there are only likely to be around 400 grants awarded for the whole of Greater Manchester.

Tenant demand and rental supply the ‘highest on record’ for June
The number of new prospective renters and supply of rental stock reached an all-time high in June, ARLA Propertymark’s June PRS report has revealed. The average branch registered 79 new tenants per branch, compared to 70 on average in May. This is the highest recorded year-on-year figure for the month of June, with a previous record of 71 in June 2019. However, this is still down on pre-lockdown figures when there was an average of 82 prospective tenants registered per branch in February. Similarly, the number of rental properties on the market continued to pick up, with the number of properties managed per branch reaching 200, an all-time high for the month of June. While this is a slight decline from 208 in May, it sets the market up for an active summer compared to the typical seasonal lull.
Estate Agency group “increasingly optimistic” about market, despite Covid
The chairman of LSL Property Services – Simon Embley – says he is “increasingly optimistic” about the outlook for the market, despite Coronavirus. His remarks come after another relatively strong set of figures in LSL’s trading statement this morning. The company – which includes national chains Reeds Rain and Your Move as well as high-end London agency Marsh & Parsons – saw its revenue fall 25 per cent in the first half of the year, mostly because of the virus lockdown. However underlying profit for the group, which also includes financial services and surveying as well as sales and lettings agencies, was up by £0.3m to £12.5m. Estate agency division underlying profit was up three per cent, buoyed particularly by strong trading in June when the housing market reopened.
RETAIL:
Pizza Express has revealed plans to close 67 of its restaurants
The planned sale will put 1,100 jobs at risk. It has also hired Lazard & Co to advise on the sale of the group. The company said the move to shut about 15 per cent of its 449 sites was a “very difficult one” but would help project 9,000 jobs. Zoe Bowley, UK&I managing director, added: “Our business has a long history of success, but the UK-wide lockdown has hit the hospitality industry particularly hard. While the financial restructuring is a positive step forward, at the same time we have had to make some really tough decisions.”
UK betting firm to repay furlough monies despite closing 119 High Street shops William Hill, based in London, has not confirmed how many jobs may be affected by these plans, but said that there will be “minimal” cost of closure. It said that the store closures are part of its “strategic alignment”, which will merge its online and retail divisions. The company also reported a 32 per cent drop in revenue for the first six months of the year, earning net revenue of £554.4m, down from £811.7m in 2019.
It added that it will be repaying funds provided to it through the government’s furlough scheme.
WH Smith to cut jobs as coronavirus impacts on High Street retail and travel
Up to 1,500 jobs could go after the coronavirus pandemic led to a fall in customers at its travel and high street shops. The retailer said it expects to report a headline loss before tax for the financial year ending 31 August of between £70m and £75m. It reported that group revenues were down 57% in July compared with the same month last year, after its travel arm was particularly badly hit by the COVID-19 crisis.
TRAVEL & TOURISM:
UK travel jobs reaching ‘worst case scenario’
Nearly three million travel and tourism jobs in the UK – and 197milion worldwide – look set to be lost due to the collapse of travel. Economic modelling conducted less than two months ago predicted this “worst case scenario” would occur if barriers to global travel, such as quarantine measures and blanket travel restrictions were to remain in place.
