Millions have no plans to return to the office
Fifty of the biggest UK employers questioned by BBC have said they have no plans to return all staff to the office full-time in the near future. Some 24 firms said that they did not have any plans in place to return workers to the office. However, 20 have opened their offices for staff unable to work from home. It comes as many employees return to work from the summer holidays with the reality of a prolonged period of home working becoming increasingly likely. The BBC questioned 50 big employers ranging from banks to retailers to get a sense of when they expected to ask employees to return to the office.
Coronavirus: Latest economic impact data from the ONS
Statistics released by the Office for National Statistics today show that 13% of the workforce is still on furlough, and that 70% of those furloughed are having their wages topped-up by their employer. Other data showed that online job adverts are at 55% of the 2019 average and that footfall at retail parks and shopping centres is continuing to increase.
CBI findings show how different industries continue to be affected by the pandemic. Its Industrial Trends Survey showed that manufacturers’ output volumes continued to fall in the three months to August (-46%), albeit at a slower rate than that recorded in July (-59%), and that manufacturers expect a smaller fall in the next three months (-10%). The Distributive Trades Survey found that retail employment fell at the fastest rate since February 2009 in the year to August (-45%) and is expected to fall faster in the next quarter (-52%). Sales were reported as being 27% lower than in ‘normal conditions’ this compares positively to 79% worse in June.
Finally, the Service Sector Survey revealed that employment in business and professional services had fallen by the quickest amount since May 2009 (-32%), but this was expected to slow in the next quarter (to -18%). Consumer services had been hit worse, with a record fall in employment (-63%), though this is set to improve slightly (to -48%).
LOCAL / REGIONAL NEWS & UPDATES:
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust to receive over £3.6 million winter support.
Stockport NHS Foundation Trust to receive £3.6m for this winter and plans for new emergency care campus take big step forward. As its support services face the pressures this winter, plans for a major new emergency care campus have this week taken a big step forward. Last year the Government pledged £30.6 million to fund a new emergency care and pathology campus on the hospital site, and this week that major development for Stockport took a big step forward when the outline business case was approved by the NHS Trust’s board of directors, subject to their approval and planning permission being granted. The new campus is set to transform NHS emergency care in the Stockport area. Providing effective care for different patient groups it will ensure that rather than all patients with urgent needs going to the same emergency department, they will be seen by the right people, in the right place, at the right time. It will include an urgent care treatment centre, GP assessment unit, and planned investigation unit, as well as new facilities for the hospital’s pathology services. Building work is scheduled to start on the campus next year and be complete in 2023.
New data: Business confidence in the North West increased during August
The latest Business Barometer from Lloyds Bank Commercial Banking shows that companies in the region reported higher confidence in their business prospects month-on-month. When asked about the impact Covid-19 was having on their business, the majority continued to see demand negatively affected during August but with the picture improving month-on-month. Regarding job retention among those with furloughed staff, 31 per cent expect to bring back more than 90 per cent of their staff – the highest proportion of all UK regions. On social distancing measures, 52 per cent said they could, in theory, operate at full capacity.
Register your interest to apply for the small business recovery grant
Following the recent announcement that the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) will be issuing European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) grants through the Growth Hub network, the Business Growth Hub is currently applying for Greater Manchester’s allocation which we believe will be agreed late August to early September. Read the Government’s press release on the grants here.
The Business Growth Hub believes that the funding available will enable them to support around 400 eligible businesses across Greater Manchester who can demonstrate that they have been impacted by COVID 19 and can also demonstrate how the funding will support them to be more productive. Priority will be given to businesses in the Visitor Economy sector. Businesses will be able to apply for 100% funded grants with a value between £1,000 and £3,000 (with grants available up to £5,000 in exceptional circumstances). The grant must support the purchase of either professional advice (accountancy, HR, legal etc) or the purchase of new technology or other equipment which will support the business being more productive (PPE can’t be funded with this funding).
In line with ERDF compliance rules, once accepted, the business must obtain at least two like-for-like quotes for the professional work which will be undertaken or the equipment/technology which will be purchased. The business must then pay for this upfront before claiming the grant back through this funding from the Business Growth Hub. Copies of bank statements will also be needed to demonstrate this expenditure. At this stage, BGH are currently taking expressions of interest until they are able to move forward with accepting full applications.
To register your interest, please complete the form HERE.
