UK HEADLINES:
Low-income workers to get self-isolation pay
The Government has announced that low-income workers who are required to self-isolate in areas where there are high rates of coronavirus will be able to claim up to £182 / £13 per day. The scheme will be trialled in Blackburn with Darwen, Pendle and Oldham where tighter lockdown measures have been introduced after a rise in cases, before a national roll-out.
New payment for people self-isolating in highest risk areas
People on low incomes who need to self-isolate and are unable to work from home in areas with high incidence of COVID-19 will benefit from a new payment scheme.
The lockdown has affected families in a variety of ways, with nobody impervious to the impact. New research however has identified a growing empathy between parents, as 87% of Brits consider themselves to have been impacted less than their friends during the lockdown. In fact, nearly half (49.8%) admit they are considerably luckier than their friends, according to a new poll.
The research of UK parents who have children currently in school identified a real empathy for friends, with a quarter of Dads feeling they were significantly luckier than their mates, compared to just 14% of mums. But the impact of the lockdown is more significant in older parents, with 71% of parents aged over 55 feeling they were more impacted compared to just 34% of younger parents aged between 18-24. This could perhaps relate to stricter lockdown measures for the older generation, or the impact on their careers as offices and businesses were forced to close.

LOCAL / REGIONAL NEWS & UPDATES:
Council requests for Stockport to be brought out of local restrictions
Stockport Council is requesting that government consider the lifting of local restrictions in the borough, when the decision is next reviewed by the Health Secretary. Stockport’s coronavirus infection rates have been falling in recent weeks, and in a statement to Councillors, this was attributed to the work of local residents in following the enhanced restrictions placed on Greater Manchester. The infection rate in Stockport is nearly at the same level as Wigan, which was removed from restrictions last week, with 38 cases recorded in the week ending August 23, down by 18 week-on-week.
Coronavirus – GM Mayor Andy Burnham’s latest press conference
26 August: Andy Burnham was joined by the leader of Stockport Council, Elise Wilson and Deputy Mayor, Baroness Bev Hughes
- Generally across Greater Manchester restrictions are working but there is no room for complacency
- GMP facing exceptional demand: crime levels are up, calls for assistance up by 42% compared with February, especially around mental health problems and 999 calls up to around 15,000 per week
- Andy Burnham is asking Government to ease some restrictions in Greater Manchester allowing more businesses to reopen, evidence shows ‘vast amount of transmission is in the home’; he is also calling for greater local control around track & trace
- There is a need to assess the re-opening of schools across some areas of Greater Manchester
- Elise Wilson: Downward trend in infection rates in Stockport and time to ease local restrictions
- Large gatherings are illegal; GMP will assist people in being compliant
- Regarding face coverings in schools, Mr Burnham said he would ‘err on the side of pupils wearing them than not’; Elise said that if restrictions are lifted locally, she would agree that it is at the discretion of the schools
- Returning to the office is safe if a workplace has everything in place to make it covid-safe
- Supply of home testing kits is ‘insufficient’
- On a positive note, Andy Burnham congratulated James Anderson on achieving 600 test wickets!

CEO of Manchester Airport Group criticises Government ‘inaction on airports’
Charles Cornish, CEO of Manchester Airports Group is calling for an end to “sluggish, illogical and chaotic” approach to quarantine as passenger numbers this Bank Holiday weekend expected to down by 75%. In his statement, Mr Cornish said “Catalonia is closer to Cheshire than it is to Gran Canaria” and repeated calls for a regional approach to travel restrictions ahead of today’s anticipated Cabinet meeting.
“This time last year, Manchester recorded not just the busiest day of the year, but the busiest in the airport’s 82-year history, as more than 115,000 people flew to or from one of our 210 destinations. A year on, we will be lucky to welcome 25,000 travellers. This is an industry that collectively supports around 2m jobs, with MAG alone making an economic contribution of £8.2bn to the UK each year.”
Mr Cornish continued: “From the very start of this pandemic, we have appealed for a support package for airports. But our request for business rates relief was ignored, despite lockdown. By contrast, Germany has secured EU State Aid approval, in order to compensate airports for lost revenue and protect their futures.”
Regarding the ‘blanket’ approach to restricted travel areas he said: “Catalonia is closer to Cheshire than it is to Gran Canaria, making this blanket approach not only unnecessary and illogical, but hugely damaging to an already-ailing sector. Germany has moved quickly to enable travel to popular resorts in the likes of Spain, while adopting a localised, targeted approach to quarantine that the UK has so far refused to consider.”

Stockport NHS seeks public view as it looks to re-open many of the services that have been on hold.
But it is facing two problems. Firstly, the number of people needing routine treatment has risen sharply because of the lockdown. Secondly, the problems created by the virus have still not gone away. So they need to find a way to re-open services with your safety as their priority as well as creating a system that means our health professionals can see as many people as possible.
Stockport NHS will use all the innovations that worked well during the pandemic and find solutions for things that didn’t go as well as we’d hoped.

Data suggests a 13 year high for the market.
The average number of sales agreed per estate agent branch stood at 13 in July – the latest data available – following the announcement of a stamp duty holiday.
This is the highest figure recorded since June 2007 when 13 sales were also recorded per member branch. Year-on-year, the number of sales per branch has increased by 44 per cent, rising from nine recorded in July 2019.
In July, eight per cent of properties sold for more than the original asking price, a fall from 10 per cent in June. However, three in five properties sold for less than the original asking price. In terms of demand in July, the number of house hunters registered per estate agent branch rose by 13 per cent, increasing from 379 in June to 428. Year-on-year, housing demand is up by a third, from 316 in July 2019.
Covid-19 impact: Houses selling much faster than flats
Figures from Zoopla quantify how Coronavirus is changing the market, with houses selling significantly faster than flats. The latest market report from the portal states: “Quarantine has galvanised many homeowners and renters into reconsidering their housing requirements, resulting in demand for more space and changing work and commuting patterns.” It says three-bedroom houses remain the fastest selling property on the market, with an average time of 24 days since the lockdown lifted.
