There have been over 4.5 million confirmed cases of coronavirus in the UK and nearly 128,000 people have died. 10 new Covid-related death were announced in the UK yesterday, Tuesday. Over 71.5 million vaccine doses have been received across the UK and over 41.8 million people have had their first dose of a coronavirus vaccine – 76.5% of all adults.
Over 30 million people have had both their first and second jab, 55.5% of all adults.
People aged 21 and over are being invited to have a first jab and the focus has shifted to offer a second vaccine within 8 weeks. The average number of daily infections in the UK is rising in some areas, fuelled by the Indian variant, with 7,673 new cases announced by the government yesterday, Tuesday.

HEADLINES & UPDATES:
Vaccination to become compulsory for care home staff in England
Covid vaccinations are to become compulsory for staff in care homes for older people in England. Care staff are expected to be given 16 weeks to have the jab – or face being redeployed away from frontline care or losing their jobs.
Consultations will begin on a similar rule for other health and care staff.
Care organisations have warned that compulsory vaccinations could cause significant difficulties in a sector that already struggles to recruit enough people.
The government, however, is believed to have considerable concerns about low take-up of the vaccine in some areas, including London.
A Whitehall source told the BBC: “These moves would save lives and there is precedent with the Hepatitis B vaccine guidance for doctors.”
MPs to vote on delay to easing of lockdown by four weeks
MPs are to vote on extending emergency Covid laws in England for another four weeks, amid concern over rising cases. On Monday, Boris Johnson said delaying the planned lifting of restrictions would give the NHS “a few more crucial weeks” to get people vaccinated. Labour has accused ministers of letting the Delta variant in by not toughening rules on travel from India sooner. It is likely to support delaying an end to lockdown, meaning the government is expected to win the vote.
Business minister Nadhim Zahawi said England had “put in place some of the most stringent Covid border measures in the world”.
UK inflation jumps to 2.1% in May as clothes and fuel prices rise
UK inflation jumped to 2.1% in the year to May, as the opening up of the economy from lockdown sparked a rise in consumer spending.
The Consumer Prices Index measure of inflation rose from 1.5% in April, according to the Office for National Statistics, driven by the rising cost of fuel and clothing.
Inflation is now at its highest since before the pandemic.
That is likely to fuel a debate about whether interest rates should go up.
May’s reading was above most economists’ forecasts of an increase of about 1.8%, and means inflation is now above the Bank of England’s 2% target.
New lifesaving Covid treatment found
Exactly a year on from the discovery that a cheap steroid drug prevented Covid deaths, researchers say they have found another life-saving therapy.
It is expensive – a potent intravenous infusion of antibodies to neutralise the virus, rather than dampen the body’s inflammatory response to it.
Results from the Recovery trial suggest it could help one in three of those in hospital with severe Covid. For every 100 patients treated, experts calculate, it would save six lives.
More than 30 million people vaccinated with second dose
More than 30 million people in the UK have received a second dose of a COVID-19 vaccine, the latest figures published today (15 June) show, as the vaccination programme continues at unprecedented pace and scale.

CONSTRUCTION:
Amey suffers £98m loss as it fights effects of Covid
The Ferrovial-owned firm reported a £98m pre-tax loss last year as it battled with loss-making contracts in highways and waste collection. Operating losses before exceptionals across the three main business streams of transport infrastructure, secure infrastructure and consulting reached £29m due to the impact of Covid, up from the £21m loss previously.
Covid blamed for record size of construction disputes
The average value of construction disputes more than doubled to £28m last year as programmes and costs increased due to the impact of Covid-19 on sites.
Contract disputes encountered by consultant Arcadis rose to the highest average value ever recorded since its survey began 11 years ago. Around three-quarters of those surveyed blamed Covid-19 impacts for the rise and uncertainty around which party was liable for the time and cost risk arising from the pandemic.

KF: Boom to last at least until the autumn
Knight Frank says it will be September at the earliest before the current frenzy of housing market activity will stabilise. The agency’s head of residential research, Tom Bill, says the start of the ‘tapering’ of the stamp duty holiday – scheduled for two weeks’ time – will trigger a slight slowdown, but the absence of summer holidays thanks to Covid restrictions will mean a summer period that will nonetheless be busier than usual. He says 2021, instead of featuring the traditional spring and autumn high sport for activity, will be divided effectively into four quarters by the stamp duty holiday tapering down and then ending.
Insurers start to pay out business interruption claims
The long running saga of insurance firms failing to honour agents’ Business Interruption claims appears to be making progress at last.
A Supreme Court ruling earlier this year found in favour of policy holders and against insurers, who claimed that most BI policies did not include Coronavirus – making claims for, amongst other things, the closure of the housing market last spring invalid. Shortly after the Supreme Court ruling many agents received standard ‘brush off’ letters, claiming the policies did not entitle the firms to any money – despite the legal judgement.

Online sales rise by 95% for ScS
ScS, which has more than 100 stores across the UK, has reported that its online order intake has increased by 95.3 per cent over the first 46 weeks of the financial year – and 165 per cent on a two-year basis. The increase in online sales comes as a result of the impact of the pandemic. The company also reported that it anticipates that its full year performance, for the year to the end of July, will be ahead of market expectations. As a result of its trading performance, ScS also confirmed that it has repaid the £3m funding granted to it through the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, and that it will be reinstating its dividends.

Deloitte: Premier League clubs suffer collective revenue drop for first time, ever
Deloitte’s Sports Business Group has reported that Premier League clubs have reported a cumulative drop in revenue for the first time ever. Premier League football clubs generated £4.5bn of revenue in 2020, a decline of 13 per cent compared to the previous year’s £5.2bn. Deloitte’s Sports Business Group, which analysed the figures, said that this is the first time that Premier League clubs have cumulatively reported a year-on-year fall in revenue. It said that as well as a decline in matchday revenue, some of the decrease is due to a portion of 2020’s revenues being deferred until 2021, as matches were delayed until after the end of the financial year.
