UK NEWS UPDATES:
NEW – Covid pass required to enter nightclubs and large events
Adults in England must now show a Covid pass to enter nightclubs, big sports matches and other large events. The new rules – which kick in today – require proof of double-vaccination, or a recent negative test, to enter certain venues.
MPs approved the measure in Tuesday’s vote on England’s new Covid rules.
The Commons also backed the continuation of mandatory mask-wearing in most indoor settings, and compulsory vaccination for NHS workers in England.
The scrapping of self-isolation for fully vaccinated Covid contacts – in favour of daily lateral flow tests – passed unanimously without a vote.
From today: Booster jab for over 18s
In line with the government’s aim to offer all adults booster jabs before the end of the year, those aged 18 and over can now book their third dose of the Covid vaccine. People are eligible for a booster three months after a second jab, but they can book after two months. So far, more than 24 million booster doses have been administered across the UK, with 513,722 booster and third doses given on Monday.
On Tuesday, the UK recorded 59,610 new Covid cases, the highest number since January, along with 150 deaths within 28 days of a positive Covid test.
The UK Health Security Agency said 633 further UK Omicron cases were reported on Tuesday, taking the total number of confirmed cases of the variant to 5,346.

The booking service expanded to all adults in England today.

MAG calls on Government to deliver on pledge to remove double-testing requirements, as latest figures show impact on demand for travel
“The Government must act to kickstart the recovery of the aviation sector by following through on its commitment to remove remaining travel testing requirements once the Omicron variant becomes dominant in the UK.”
That was the message delivered by Manchester Airports Group (MAG) after the Health Secretary announced that all 11 countries will be removed from the red list from 4am today on the grounds it is not effective in slowing the arrival of the variant. MAG is calling on the Government to extend this proportionate and positive approach to lift the requirement for all international arriving passengers to take both a pre-departure test and a Day 2 PCR test.

The Locality Boost Grant is for district centre trading associations or their equivalent. District centre trading associations can bid for your local area to run events to drive footfall that will support local businesses that are reopening. If the local area does not have a trading association that can lead the bid, an equivalent lead accountable body or local business will need to be agreed by businesses in that area. SECTOR SPECIFIC CORONAVIRUS-RELATED NEWS:
BUSINESS:
Inflation hits 10-year high
The cost of living surged by 5.1% in the 12 months to November, up from 4.2% the month before, and its highest level since September 2011. The jump in inflation, twice the Bank of England’s 2% target rate, will intensify debate over whether interest rates should rise. Rising transport and energy costs drove the rise, which was above forecasts of a 4.7% increase, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) – a rise in fuel, energy, clothing and second- hand cars were big factors. And the cost of raw materials also rose significantly. Figures showed petrol prices jumped to the highest ever recorded – 145.8p a litre last month – while the cost of used cars also raced higher due to shortages of new vehicles as supply chain issues continue to hit the economy.

New construction work is set to grow significantly next year in the industrial building sector, particularly warehousing and logistics and in hotel & leisure, helped by recovery in the travel business. Meanwhile, construction workloads in the north of England and the Midlands will benefit from the government’s focus on ‘levelling-up’ whilst the work pipeline for civils contractors will be bolstered by public sector investment in major infrastructure projects.

TRAVEL:
Change to rules for travelling abroad and coming to the UK
The Covid testing rules for entering the UK have been changed – affecting anyone planning a trip abroad. Because of worries about the Omicron variant, all travellers coming to the UK now need to take a test before they set off – and another when they arrive.
Before departure:
All travellers to the UK aged 12 and over must show proof of a negative test, even if they are fully vaccinated. This can be a PCR or a lateral flow test and must be taken in the two days before departure for the UK. You’ll need to find a private test provider for this – free NHS lateral flow kits are not allowed. The test can be taken either in the country where you start your journey, or in another country en route to the UK (for instance if you’re travelling overland). If you test positive, you should follow local rules in place in the country you’re in and must not travel to the UK.
Arriving in the UK:
You have two days to take another test – which must be a PCR. This must be booked before you travel and bought privately from a government-approved list of providers. While you are waiting for a result, you must self-isolate – whether or not you have been vaccinated. You can stop self-isolating if your test is negative.
Everyone aged five and over (11 and over in Scotland) must take these tests.
In addition, all travellers coming to the UK must complete an online passenger locator form no more than 48 hours before arriving – even if they are just passing through the UK.
The testing rules do not apply to travellers from Ireland, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man (unless they have been in another country in the 10 days before departure for the UK).
Will I need to quarantine in a hotel on arrival in the UK?
No – you would only have to do this if you were travelling from a country on the UK’s travel red list. However, the government has now removed all countries from this list.Coronavirus (COVID-19): cruise ship travel
Guidance on cruise travel during the coronavirus outbreak – clarified information on passenger locator form and COVID-19 testing.
