Young people from Stockport celebrated receiving The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award at a presentation evening at the Town Hall.
Over 200 young people attended the event on 19th March from schools, colleges, the Open Duke of Edinburgh Awards Centre and voluntary sector organisations to receive their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards.
The celebration event was presided over by the Mayor of Stockport, Councillor Wendy Meikle. The awards were presented by Natalie Massey, member of the 2012 Paralympics GB Swimming Team and Jennifer Pinches, member of the 2012 Team GB Gymnastic Team. Several of those receiving their Awards also entertained the audience with presentations, music and dance.
To gain a Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, young people need to reach the required standard in four sections: volunteering (any activity that helps others), skill (such as playing a musical instrument), physical recreation (such as Judo), a multi-day expedition, and at Gold level a five day residential project.
Councillor Shan Alexander, Stockport Council’s Executive Councillor for Lifelong Learning and Achievement, said: “This was a hugely popular event and each year we see more and more of Stockport’s young people getting involved and gaining this award. I would encourage young people who are interested in participating to contact the Council to find out more about The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award.”
Stockport Council’s Services for Young People manages the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award which is open to all Stockport young people aged between 14 and 25 years old. There are around 700 young people currently working towards an Award.
