Work to begin on new A6 crossing near Stockport Interchange

Construction work will start on 8th January on a new pedestrian and cycle crossing on the A6 that will better link the transport Interchange and rooftop Viaduct Park with other parts of Stockport town centre.

The new pedestrian and cycle crossing will be located on the A6 viaduct over Daw Bank between the southern entrance to Viaduct Park and the Hatworks Museum.

The scheme is part of the council’s commitment to sustainable travel and comes on the back of the recently completed walking and cycling improvements at Stockport Interchange and the improved connections in St Peter’s Square that link through to the Market Place and Underbanks.

The first phase of the work will take place overnight from 7pm on Wednesday, January 8th to 5am on Thursday, January 9th.

During this time the A6 will be closed to through traffic in both directions between Exchange Street and Heaton Lane. Signed diversion routes will be in place during the closure.

The Heaton Lane bus gate will remain in operation during the closure, with southbound traffic on the A6 diverted to turn down the Travis Brow Link Road and onto King Street West.

Further overnight closures are planned to take place at times during the course of the work and updated will be provided the local community and users of the A6 in advance once dates have been confirmed.

When night working is taking place, the noisiest activities will be carried out as early as possible in the shift to minimise disturbance to nearby properties.

In addition to the installation of the new crossing, the works will also involve:

• Widening of the footways on the A6 to accommodate a shared footway/cycleway, linking to the southern Viaduct Park entrance on the west and Hooper Street on the east.
• The addition of a railing to increase the height of the A6 viaduct parapet to allow for cyclists on the new sections of footway/cycleway.
• The removal of the northbound bus stop outside Universal DB, which was required on a temporary basis during the construction of Stockport Interchange.

To allow the safe installation of the railing on the A6 Viaduct, Daw Bank will be closed to traffic in both directions between the Exchange Street and Mersey Square junction for a two-week period in March 2025.
