Councillors on Stockport Council’s Planning & Highways Regulation Committee have been recommended to grant planning approval to two apartment schemes in the town centre and Cheadle.
In the town centre, Stockport Homes is seeking to bring forward a 24 apartments on the site of 1-19 Hillgate. Plans, designed by TADW Architects, propose constructing a single three-storey block of 17 two-bedroom and 7 one-bedroom apartments on the corner of Higher Hillgate and Higher Barlow Row. The site is currently occupied by a disused 20th Century retail warehouse, which will be demolished to make way for the scheme.
The development is also being supported by a Homes England grant in order to ensure the viability of the scheme, which will deliver 100% affordable housing provision with all 24 apartments made available for shared ownership.
In Cheadle, up to 98 apartments are being proposed by Empire Property Concepts in a residential conversion of the former AA offices, Lambert House on Stockport Road, with developers seeking permission to change the use of the two office blocks to allow residential use. The larger four storey block (pictured) would comprise 68 apartments, with a further 30 apartments in the smaller three storey building.
Plans also include an on-site gym and co-working spaces for residents, as well as 109 car parking spaces and 100 covered cycle parking spaces. Unlike the town centre scheme, however, no affordable housing provision has been included in the plans for Lambert House, which developers argue would make the scheme no longer financially viable. Despite this, planning officers have recommended the scheme for approval, subject to an agreement to secure developer contributions should it be found viable in the future.
Stockport Council’s Planning & Highways Regulation Committee will meet on Thursday 17th August at 6pm.
