Plans for a scheme of 24 affordable apartments off Higher Hillgate in Stockport town centre are to move forward following progress towards a compulsory purchase order for part of the site.
Stockport Homes Group originally submitted plans in December 2022 for the single three-storey block of 17 two-bedroom and 7 one-bedroom apartments on the corner of Higher Hillgate and Higher Barlow Row. The development will deliver 100% affordable housing provision.
Plans were drawn up following discussions with landowners on a viable future for the site, which is split across a mix of privately owned plots, Council-owned property and some unregistered land, and was primarily occupied by a occupied by a disused 20th Century retail warehouse.
In a report for councillors on Stockport’s Economy, Regeneration & Climate Change Scrutiny Committee, Stockport Council sought consent to move ahead with purchasing the privately owned parcels of land for as agreed in principle with landowners. Assuming no objections to the compulsory purchase order are made, the transaction could complete in six to nine months. The Council will also insure itself in the event of any future ownership claims on unregistered land on the site.
TADW were architects on the scheme, which is also expected to be supported by a Homes England Affordable Housing and Brownfield grants that will enable the project’s financial viability.
