Hallidays Tough Mudders raise over £1200 to brighten the lives of people with dementia at The Weekend Day Centre
Hallidays team members completed the Tough Mudder challenge at Cholmondeley Castle on Saturday 9th September raising over £1,200 for their chosen charity, Stockport-based ‘The Weekend Day Centre’ which supports people with dementia and their families.
11 team members waded through mud and together tackled the 4.5-mile course of 13 obstacles or the extreme 12-mile course of 20 obstacles designed to test their physical strength and sense of humour to the limit. The infamous obstacles included ‘The Block Ness Monster’, where team members had to roll themselves through 60ft of slick, rotating barriers and the ‘Artic Enema’ a high-speed slide into 10 tons of ice!

‘Hallidays are proud to be fundraising for The Weekend Day Centre, bringing fun and enjoyment back into the lives of people with dementia and their carers. Several of our team member have supported friends or family affected by dementia and understand what a challenging and often lonely time this can be. Tough Mudder was a fantastic experience which our team will be laughing about for a long time!’
Dan Sullivan, Hallidays team member said:
“The torrential rain didn’t hold us back! It was exhausting, but it was such fun. From the DJ’s comedy warm-up drills to crossing the finishing line together as a team, we had a laugh and supported each other. Sliding into ice cold water and completing the electric shock obstacles were the most daunting but we spurred each other on. We’re all so proud to have completed the course, raising money to enable others to have fun at the Weekend Day Centre.”
Hallidays team members voted the Weekend Day Centre to be their chosen charity for 2017/19 and are also planning an aeroplane wing-walk as their next challenge. Hallidays have a long history of fundraising for local charities having previously raised over £5000 for Beechwood Cancer Care, Beacon Counselling and The Seashell Trust.
It is currently estimated that there are 3,800 people in Stockport with dementia, which is expected to rise to over 5,000 by 2025 if prevalence rates remain the same and the population changes as expected (Source: Stockport Dementia Strategy).
The centre provides a range of fun, social activities at weekends and bank holidays for local people living with dementia. It also gives vital support to their carers enabling them to take a break or socialise with other carers. In 1999, their work gained national recognition winning first place in the Carers Scheme category at the Social Care Awards. The centre is planning to introduce new, themed mid-week sessions bringing together people with a shared interest e.g. crafts or woodwork, to enjoy their hobby together.
