Stockroom, Stockport town centre’s new library and creative hub, has welcomed over 250,000 visitors since opening three months ago.
Since its opening in May, visitors have borrowed 20,000 books, enjoyed over 15,000 coffees, and joined in with more than 100 events: from storytelling and creative workshops to live performances.
Stockroom has brought new life into disused retail units as well as helping to create a rejuvenated atmosphere along Merseyway, which has registered record footfall over the summer. The space features a library, children’s learning space, café, studios and the Stockport Council Archives.
Visitors to Stockroom had the following to say about the town’s new cultural hub:
“It’s cool, there’s cafes. It’s a proper chill out place. I love it because I don’t have to walk around and do shopping.”
“It’s a very, very cool place. It’s very accessible for wheelchairs, which I found great. For mums not to bring the children here, the kids are missing out massively.”
“It’s a lot more vibrant (than other spaces) and it gives you a bit more motivation because it doesn’t feel like you’re doing work necessarily.”
Cllr Dan Oliver, Cabinet Member for Culture at Stockport Council, said:
“Stockroom was designed to be a place for everyone and it’s amazing to see so many people embracing it so quickly. The response has been fantastic, and this is only the beginning.”
