Mansell Building Solutions has been appointed as part of the delivery team for the forthcoming Academy of Living Well, a purpose-built 82-bed care facility within a new intergenerational community being built on the former St Thomas Hospital site in Stockport town centre.
Appointed by main contractor, Rowlinson, Mansell’s remit includes installing brick tie channels, insulation and cavity trays, all applied in factory settings to facilitate rapid construction on site.
Alongside its panelised solution of Light Gauge Steel Frames (LGSF), the company will also deliver its first ever hot rolled steel podium structure to the entire ground floor. The podium structure will house eight independent living apartments and a range of communal spaces for the Academy of Living Well with the LGSF structure constructed directly above.
Situated on the former St Thomas’ Hospital site in Shaw Heath, which dates back to the 1840s and has been vacant since 2004, the project required meticulous access planning due to space constraints.
Ian Curme, head of pre-construction at Mansell Building Solutions, said:
“Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) is the future of building efficiency and therefore the perfect fit for an innovative facility.
“Stockport is an extremely forward-thinking borough, and we’re pleased to be playing our part in delivering accommodation that will serve Stopfordians brilliantly.”
The Academy of Living Well sits within one of the flagship neighbourhoods in Stockport’s Town Centre West area that is being brought forward by Stockport MDC as part of the town centre’s £1 billion regenerations ambitions. Lead contractor on the scheme, Cheadle-based Rowlinson Construction, broke ground on the St Thomas Gardens site in Autumn 2024.
Operating across the UK, Mansell is a specialist contractor for panelised construction and MMC based in Greater Manchester. The firm is also involved elsewhere in Stockport town centre on delivering an affordable housing scheme on King Street West.
