Employers in Stockport are being encouraged to offer work placements as part of the UK Youth Summer Jobs Programme to support young people in the borough at risk of violence.
The programme will provide young people with direct employment opportunities in with employers in their local area. Young people will gain key skills needed to support future employment opportunities along with being paid for the placement. The six-week programme includes a preparation week and five weeks of work experience, all with the dedicated support of a youth worker. Around 150 young people are expected to be supported by the scheme in Greater Manchester.
The scheme, being run by UK Youth, aims to support 600 vulnerable young people with work placements nationwide in target areas which include all 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester, including Stockport. It also gives businesses the unique opportunity to be a trailblazer in the first-of-its-kind youth employment programme, built on successful models in the USA. The Summer Jobs Programme aims to build new skills, boost job prospects, and prevent young people getting involved in crime. The programme funding includes a rigorous evaluation which will be carried out by the Ending Youth Violence Lab.
Young people (aged 16-25) will work 25 hours per week for 5 weeks during the school summer holidays, and will need one consistent supervisor and mentor throughout the programme. Further e-learning and upskilling for staff will also be available from organisers. There is an employer contribution to the cost ranging between £200-750 depending on the size of the business.
Further information about the scheme and details of how businesses in Stockport can apply to take part can be found online here and in the work placement programme’s brochure.
