Stockport Council becomes a member of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter

Stockport Council has become an official member of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter.

At Friday’s Greater Manchester Combined Authority (GMCA) meeting, hosted by Stockport Council, Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham presented the local authority with a plaque to officially recognise the council meeting the high standards set by the charter.

Achieving Member status sees Stockport Council join the likes of Allied Bakeries, One+All and Stockport Homes as employers in the borough committed to offering high quality employment opportunities and supporting the wellbeing of colleagues.

Established in 2020, the Good Employment Charter recognises organisations who are committed to the wellbeing of their colleagues, by pledging to pay the real living wage, engaging staff in key decisions and endorsing fair and flexible working conditions. Membership of the Charter means that the council has demonstrated it is a great place to work for all colleagues. 

Andy Burnham, the Mayor of Greater Manchester, presented the plaque to Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, and Caroline Simpson, Chief Executive. The Mayor praised the council’s commitment to improving the working lives of all its officers, particularly the way the local authority has put the fair and inclusive priority at the core of its vision statement and values. 

Cllr Mark Hunter, Leader of Stockport Council, said:

“It’s a great honour to have been officially welcomed as Members of the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter. We recognise that there are still improvements that can be made, and continue to work closely with our workforce to strive to make Stockport Council the very best place to work. We continue our recruitment drive to attract top talent to our borough and workforce, and Membership to the Charter demonstrates our commitment to making the council a fair, inclusive and positive environment for everyone to work in. I encourage all businesses in Stockport and beyond to consider signing up to the Charter.”
