A Stockport college plumbing apprentice is in line to be named the UK’s best!
Alfie Hodges from Whaley Bridge is a Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2017 finalist
After a nationwide search, local plumbing apprentice Alfie Hodges has made it through to the final round of the Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2017 competition.
Currently working towards his plumbing apprenticeship, at Stockport College, Alfie, 18, is one of ten finalists from across the UK.
During the semi-finals, Alfie stood out from other applicants for his passion for plumbing, along with dedication and enthusiasm towards his course earning a spot in the grand finale at Google’s Head Office in London later this month. There, he will complete in a group task and one-to-one interview in front of a panel of judges.
Alfie stated:
“To be chosen as one of the finalists for this year’s Screwfix Trade Apprentice of the Year competition is such an honour, and I’m so excited to be taking part in the final at Google HQ!
“Having shadowed a local plumber in the school holidays one year, which helped me secure my apprenticeship, my eyes opened to a career as a plumber and I’ve never looked back. I work on a lot of bathrooms and have recently helped build a bespoke bathroom to meet the needs of a disabled boy, which was a really fulfilling experience.
“To see the impact my work has on people’s day-to-day lives, as well as completing a job to the best of my ability is such a fantastic feeling. To be recognised for doing something I love and representing my town in a national competition makes me feel incredibly proud.”
One winner will walk away with the title of Screwfix Trade Apprentice 2017, receiving a business and trade bundle worth £10,000, including a laptop with accessories, £5,000 worth of Screwfix products and funds for future training courses to help kick start their career.
In its third year, this highly competitive award led by omni-channel retailer Screwfix aims to celebrate and champion the best trade apprentices and future stars of construction.
Andrew Livingston, CEO of Screwfix comments:
“There is an ongoing focus on the importance of apprenticeships for the UK economy and for construction in particular, which is facing a significant skills gap. Therefore, we believe it’s important we play our part in encouraging those who have chosen to undertake an apprenticeship. Our search for Screwfix Trade Apprentice of 2017 not only supports their endeavours but also inspires a strong future for the UK’s construction industry.
“Alfie is an example of a motivated young person who will be an integral part of the plumbing industry and a successful future tradesperson. I’d like to wish him and all the finalists the best of luck!”
